The Dv Song Project

Hi fellow musicians,

I've a suggestion about making an official song/march for DV :D How? Here we go;

I see there are lots of guitarists, singers and all the other stuff here :) So, first let's see who wants to be in this project. Anyone, any kind of instrument is appreciated :D Then we, all the forum people will decide the style of music (If you ask me, I suggest funk/rock mix). Everybody will take a part in rhythms, vocals(If anyone can write lyrics ;) ), someone can write drum parts or we can use a template, this part is about our creativity.

Members will record their parts and will send to mixing guy (I can do this or any other experienced member). Maybe this sounds good but looks hard for you, but be sure, it's tooo easy :) We had 2 project in some other forums and both worked perfect :content:

Now, let's see who wants to join "DV Internet Band" :)

I play guitar(rhythm or lead) and I can add synth parts if we decide to use.

I am an experienced guitar player, song writer and sound engineer. I would love to be part of this. :)

Im not much of a musician, but I can sing, I'd love to give it a shot! I wouldn't mind trying my hand at throwing in a lyric or two.

I am a pretty serious video hobbyist with the needed equipment. Maybe I can do the music video?

It would involve having everyone mail me clips of themselves in DV(not dreamviews) format. I could put it all together and add some special effects.

@CryoDragoon; you can download loads of recording programs. For example, I use Cakewalk Sonar 4 and Cubase SX3. It doesn't matter how did you record it, we just need raw wave file. Try to download Sonar 4 trial, it's easy to use with a little reading of help file.

@13redfan and Tom_Peace; you can start thinking and writing your thought about lyrics, what are you waiting for? :D

Come on people, we need more :D Share your ideas about song style or anything else.

Let's keep that musician search stuff till Friday. After that, we can start making music.

That's really cool Seeker :thumbup: We can take ideas about that too. Maybe it'd be hard to take video clips for everybody but I think you can use your own material to make a video, maybe a dream related one. It's up to you :)

I play electric guitar (mostly rhythm), rap and use a digital sequencer for percussions and melodies (various instruments), so I'll help out in whatever way I can.

I Play guitar: lots of styles; Bossanova, Spanish Flamenco, Classical Guitar Picking Melodies, Ska and Reggae, Metal-ish Riffs, Punk riffs, funk and Soulfull riffs and mostly self made up music.

i suggest it is not something like punk rock, or hard music... i like flowing music, maybe latin/flamenco

I play electric guitar, but NOT THAT WELL... I could be any guitar that is NOT lead guitar.
I've been wanting a bass, too... Anyway.
I can do some basic mixing of muisic as well, I could easily put together a song. As in, taking an .mp3 of the guitar, one of lyrics, drums, everything else, and mashing it together. I can manage that. As for the actual playing, I can technically do it, but I don't know how to get it onto a PC.

All right! Let's do this thing. I'll start working on some lyrics, and post snippets when I have, then we can take all the lyrics we get from everyone who's writing and stick 'em together. As for vocals, well, if you guys send me some rythms or chorus bits I'll record me singing some bits.
Which programs would I use to record? Or just stick my microphone in and sing away?

You guys better find a recording musician for basic tips. I can help too ;) We can settle this up after Friday.

@13redfan; Ya, we'll post each other all the stuff and then eliminate/change or whatever. Finally singer will say the words ;)

As we are getting more people, we can think of making 2 groups and each group can make their own song. On the final stage, we can make a poll for the official one :) I think, making this project like a competition can add more fun ;) Your ideas?

Yeah thatd be quite cool, it'd be quite a mission to organise though don't you think? I mean already there's 8 people in for making a song. How about we set a standard for the song, like length, style, chorus how many verses, name etc. so that we can all produce something along a similar line of thought?

Like, have everyone post names for the band, and names for the first song, then a poll to choose 1.

Then get all the lyricists (I think that's how you say it lol) to post their chorus' and verses, or snippets of verse, and then a poll for which is the best.

Then have 2 or 3 guys to mix the music in, and once we've all co-ordinated everything we can put the mp3s on and have a poll to see which is the best?

Then maybe have a competition for the best lyricist, best guitarist, best mixer, etc. etc.

I dunno that's my ideas

Shoot, you know what - I was working on a song this past summer called "Elusive Lucid Dream". I never really finished it (like most of my little music projects) but it was really inspired by this site. I dug up what had started (guitar, bass, and drum tracks). I'm in no way suggesting we use this, but what the hell, it's not like I have anyone else I could share it with that could relate to it.

Here's the tracks I mixed with GarageBand.(you'll probably need headphones to hear the intro - I had to compress the crap out of it due to uploading restrictions :? )

Below are lyrics for it which I attempted to mix in once, but didn't record enough takes to get a good sample.

I play the flute (and the guitar, but very badly), but I&#39;ve never tried using my mic to record myself playing flute before, so I don&#39;t know if I can help.

ohhhhhh I see why some song links don&#39;t work for me, I try to open them in FireFox but they can only be opened in IE for some reason. Oh well&#33;


*It would be nice to have a dream-like quality to the song, something a little strange, maybe a change in tempo at certain points.
*Some long winding strings or something similar.
*Some backwards sounds, high hat click and guitar solo (I can sort out the guitar part)
*Vocal line could use some Indian techniques with note bending and trills.
*Everyone that wants to can out their sounds in but we have to be delicate and not over power any other theme but instead have everything complimenting everything else.

I don&#39;t totally understand, what is the theme/type of music we should do. Like I said, I will be very happy to participate if someone tells me what to play, or at least what kind of sound to go for, and what role what I will play is. What sound are we going for?

yes... the change in rythm could be good... and i suggest a somewhat "radical change"... changing the rhythm completely, but keeping the same feeling in the song itself...

I know something I could do. Somebody mentioned somewhere about something Indian being in the background. Since guitar, bass, drums, mixing, leads, and pretty much everything else I do are already taken, there&#39;s one thing left - Tabla.

I could put together some Tabla loops. Just tell me the tempo and time signature you want (whenever you get that stuff worked out).

I could also do some sound effects or sound enhancement if needed.

Thats some lyrics. Kinda... bad.. I think.... I dunno...

I&#39;m a composer myself. So perhaps if you wanted a straightfoward march, and kind of lead that into something more "foreign" or "trance-y" to show the transgression from consciousness to the dream world. Like have the bass continue and fade into something else, maybe bringing along a sitar and guitar in counterpoint and into fugato, and forming into a "liquid-ish slide" of beats, sounds and synth stuff.

Or even take it further and bounce back and forth between genres and styles to represent REM stages and other things, such as new dreams shifting. Perhaps a cohesive melody or theme that keeps coming back.

I have a song that me and my friend made awhile ago that falls into this dreamish category. It&#39;s titled "Orange Horses Clothed in Red". :lol:

I&#39;ll post it soon.

Just messing around some, with the melody that Tom Peace posted. I added this breakbeat to it, but it&#39;s just something thrown together. I didn&#39;t even make the beat from scratch. It&#39;s an altered preset from a drum machine.
But I did start playing the guitar along with the song, and came up with this elec guitar part for it, as I was improvising. :cooler:

Ok guys, I have a mix of my music with Joseph_Stalin&#39;s music and Oneironaut music.
If you like it then we can just keep adding more and more tracks if others wish to put their stuff in too go ahead.
If not everyone likes this version then we can change things around and do whatever.

While Listening think of a scene from waking life to start off, then transition into the dreaming world. From there imagine a dream scene and as things progress, more of the dream world becomes apparent.
You could think of the contrast between Lucid dreaming and unconscious deaming.
Then witness as the scene changes back to the waking world.

The counting was to keep time on one bit that I was recording. When I had done it it reminded me of counting when trying to WILD, so I left it in.

Thanks a bunch man, and you&#39;ve more than done it justice. :)

I had figured the counting was either for the feel of a WILD-induced dream, or, as you&#39;ve said, to help you keep time. A fugato in 3/8 time doesn&#39;t help either when you&#39;re trying to record parts over something.

well I wasn&#39;t even trying to keep perfect time or anything it was just a rough guide for me. In the end I thought that was perfect for a WILD style counting thing, when you try that technique you find that your counting goes all over the place. (I just made my self a coffee milkshake, taste central)

I play drums and I also sing, yeah.

And one thing I could do to this is like, make it sound dreamy. I have a sexy wave editor.

I hate to sound like an ass but I used to be a lot better at singing before my voice broke -- if you want to keep singing so well, you&#39;re going to need to put in a lot of work. I didn&#39;t realise this to a while after mine broke, like a bit of a prat.

I&#39;m a metal/funk/rock drummer - unfortunately I just sold/ gave away all my recording equipment.

Due to my equipment change, I can&#39;t do anything at the moment :( But Tom&#39;s doing well ;) I hope I&#39;ll fix my problems asap.

Had a little fun this weekend messing around with the tune myself -> DV song-TJmix

I like the idea of taking one concept (like Tom&#39;s piece) and rendering different versions and takes on it. I got a couple other genres I might try, but this one still has some refining and work left on it.

PS- Tom, I wasn&#39;t able to get to that piece you posted on the 25th :( - could you update it? (maybe take out the spaces in the file name?)

Is it possible to record guitar with nothing but cables and a PC? I might be able to put a mic right up to the amp, but I&#39;m not sure if that would work well. I&#39;m not sure if I can contribute much, but I want to do something.

Sure, just a cable with a male 1/4" prong on one end (for the guitar) and male 1/8" prong on the other.

Does your amp have headphone jack? All you&#39;ll need is some way of getting your guitar signal into the mic input of your PC. This usually just requires a cable with one end being a male 1/8" prong (to fit the PC input). Most guitars are 1/4", so you might need a 1/4" > 1/8" converter.

This way you go from guitar (1/4") to PC (1/8")

OR

guitar > amp (1/4") then amp headphone (or "output") jack (1/4" or 1/8") > PC (1/8")

I&#39;ll look for that. Even so, I&#39;m not sure what I can contribute. I can do relatively easy solos, and backup guitar is fine, but David Gilmour I ain&#39;t.

Too bad there isn&#39;t a complete orchestra in here&#33; I once thought of this theme, it was happy, like I was flying through the sky, or something equally cliche.

It&#39;s funny, I hadn&#39;t listened to that song posted above until just recently, but both are in the same key, and have similar progressions&#33;

I have a full orchestra VSTi (along with various samples), and I could make an mp3 file of that melody, just tell me the instruments (since it doesn&#39;t say anywhere on there). I can do:

Viola, Violin, Cello, Bass, Flute, Clarinet, Dizi (chinese flute), Erhu (Chinese String Instrument), Tuba, Trombone, Trumpet, Horn, Piano, and pretty much any percussion you can think of. Sounds really realistic too.

Problem is, I&#39;m not sure if I&#39;ll be able to get that done by this week, because I&#39;m composing something right now that I really want to get done soon. I only have a week left for my trial (the orchestra is a trial of Synful Orchestra), but if your thing isn&#39;t that long or complicated, I might be able to get it done.

So, let me know what instruments to use, what tempo (I&#39;m not really sure what Allegro non troppo is), and if that&#39;s all there is to it or if there&#39;s more...

Hey that&#39;s neat, although the theme isn&#39;t in its entirety (I don&#39;t even think the second half of what I posted was even appropriate..hmm maybe)

But length wise? It could be a stand-alone overture, which isn&#39;t of considerable length. I doubt it would consist of multiple movements

Okay...I guess I&#39;ll make a short mp3 to demonstrate what I can do.

Yea, no doubt. Don&#39;t get me wrong, you definitely need a certain flow. I just meant, it&#39;s not exactly the first thing that&#39;ll set you apart.

I read over the first topic (but nothing else, really), doesn&#39;t look like you have any violin or bass players.

Fortunately, I play both everyday. Message me if I&#39;m needed, I would be happy to play something on either instrument.

Just making it known that I&#39;m still interested in this project. Haven&#39;t had much time for brainstorming, myself, but I&#39;m on call, when needed. :wink:

Quick question: Who is the ringleader of this project? Dunno, it seems to me that the problem you have here is there are too many talented people wanting on board, and no one stepping up to the plate to organize it, or blunt enough to cut the fat. y&#39;know? First and foremost, you should pick a starting point and solidify what genre, no? Then, I would take ideas on themes, melodies, chord progressions and assign who is in charge of what part from there.

Just a thought to whoever&#39;s spearheading this momentous task. The only reason I care is I think it would be interesting to see the final product of how all these people from different time zones, countries, and genres end up working together.

I was going to say the same thing... decided not to. But yeah, the project will definitely die (more) if no one is organizing it. And this would need a lot of organization, considering it&#39;s over the internet. So any sort of "leader" would have to have a lot of music theory knowledge or at least just song-writing knowledge. Sure, you can get a bunch of talented people... doesn&#39;t mean something good will come out of it unless it is organized.
