After looking through this section, I thought I might as well post up some stuff I have done in the past.

A couple of the renders I do from time to time where inspired from dream I had, which involved a desolate and barren desert. Ever since, I kinda have been trying to nail the desert look in my renders, and here's two I have made from my efforts.

      Sand Storm
Desertscape (lousy name, I know, but I'm crap at naming thngs)

Everything else in my dA gallery either spawns from my imagination, or is loosely based on dreams I have. Dreams really are a great source for inspiration...

Oh, I use Terragen 2 for these renders... just an FYI

Very cool, can I ask you how the hell you use terragen 2? It is very complicated.

You kinda need experience in using Node graph based interfaces, but once you get your head around it, it is fairly intuitive (at least to me). A lot of it comes from experimenting with different aspects of the program and then taking the results of your experimentation and putting them together in order to work towards a decent render. Here's a tip, it's all to do with how you use the Perlin fractal generators. By using the Perlin noise as a basis for not only the landscape shape, but also for the displacement or even specular/illumination effects, you can do a lot of amazing things. The desert scene used the Redirect shader, in which you input three different Perlin maps into the X, Y and Z displacements. This then distorts the landscape using the reference provided by the different perlin maps so to create the rugged, twisted, overhanging strata on the rock faces.

Texturing is done similarly, though for things like fake stone shaders, you need to place them after the textures, otherwise they won't appear.

There's not much documentation for Terragen 2 at the moment, but there should be enough user-made tutorials to get you started. Just visiting the forums and follow the links/ask questions.

Wow. That's really all I can say!

Have you posted what that/those dream(s) were about? I wish mine had such vivid landscapes!

No problem. Will post more when I get enough time to render more scenes, since the final result rendered at high quality can take over a day to complete!

Yeah... Had it discounted because I registered Terragen v0.9.... plus with dollars being nearly $1.8 to £1, it was affordable for me at the time... so it means no more restrictions for me.

Those are great! Had a dream when I was about 10 that was VERY similar to that landscape. Only difference was that there was an ancient arena in the midst of it all.

Had totally forgotten about it till I saw your renders.

      Keep it up.

Nice... glad that my renders managed to jog some memories! I still remember one of nightmares from when I had when I was still young kid (4-5, maybe... can't remember exactly)... it involved me being lost in a city that existed on the sole of a shoe. So weird....
