InTruedHer- another Tornado step-by-step

Hey all,

Well, per request of a certain member here (;) ), I was asked to make lesbian themed piece for part of my Trybe series. So, not wanting to disapoint her, I'm back at the drawing board :teeth:

Since it was DV member inspired, I thought I might as well do a third step-by-step in the Artist's Corner. Enjoy!

Step I:Concept sketches:
Below are sketches I started off on. There were a couple different views which came to mind and as you can see, I was able to settle on one of them. However, as I was in the refining process, I kept coming up with small variations on the poses. Each seemed to have their own appeal to them (sexier looking vs. eroticism) - but I think I was able to narrow it down to one for the final. I might try doing smaller practice pieces of the other ideas I had.

Oh, still not sure about the title, for now it's InTruedHer. I have an idea of what the setting and background will be, that could effect the title.

That's so cool, Joe! You are so good at drawing the human form - and in your own way - that I could pick out a sketch of yours out of a crowd. I like the final sketch you decided on. Can't wait to see the next step.

Impressive sketches, how long have you been drawing? I always have a problem with feet when I draw people, whether they have footwear or not, and faces too.. actually especially faces heh.

Thanks Burns - there is still something that bothers me about the last sketch: the way both arms are so parallel. Looks a bit stiff. I might go back and tinker with it, but I gotta work out the markings and background yet.

Ah, those are exactly the same two things I still have issues with myself - you just don't see the piles of other "sketches" I go through! :undecided: Feet I've been noticing some improvement - but faces are a bitch. I don't know how these comicbook people get gorgeous and handsome characters every time!

hmm... maybe if the kneeling woman's arm was over the leg, rather than inside it... but then it would kinda block the breast. Honestly though, I didn't even notice that until you said it.

But yeah, I didn't notice the arms being too parallel until he mentioned it, either.

LOL! Amazing how some things get right by some people - and also how some people catch things that even I don't intend! But yah, that one was intentional. Still, I think it looks too much like she's 'poking' rather than caressing (that just ain't my style :ohyahbaby: )

Well shucks, I spent like an hour last night fiddling with the damn thing and may have come up with an alternative (but I agree with you two, still like the original :bigteeth:) I haven't scanned them yet, but I'll try and do that tonight so I can get a general concensus. The hand pictured here was just my first attempt - looks like she's got a cramp or carpel tunnel!! :tongue:

Step Ib: background/setting
I always imagined these two in up on some sort of pedestal, isolated up high, yet very visible - kind of on display. Like a stage. So I came up with this sorta tree stump thinggy with a flat, soft, smooth top where they can "perform" :chuckle:

I think I might add some vines and stuff in the background. I'm going to try and make it so it looks like they're under a canopy of heavy foliage, with rays of light kinda peeking through. I wasn't really happy with the lighting on the last piece (HerLayRiseHer), so I'm going to try and do better with this one.

Love the pedestal, but I liked the arm in the original one better. You're right, it looks like an uncomfortable and unnatural position... and now that I know what the hand was doing before, you can't do better than that!

How about making the palm of her hand facing upward? Maybe take a little bit of the sharpness out of the angle of her wrist and make the finger that's visible be her thumb, instead of her pinky, so that shes resting on the back of her hand? That might entail bending her arm just slightly and bringing the elbow back, so that it's not straight up and down. (Her palm is facing downward in the sketch, right? That's how I see it.)

And I love the way you do those crazy-ass tree limbs/vines. :happy:

If I'm interpreting this right that sounds like it might be painful :wtf: By back of the hand, you mean like the top? Like making a fist and resting knuckles on ground?

Heh, it's actually quite theraputic working on stuff like that - I just sit there and zone out.

Step II: refining
Still tinkering with the arm but I think I'm close. I got one more concept I sketched out last night which could be the one. This one is from the night before.

Also working on some hairstyles. I was watching Honey the other day (shut up, Jessica Alba was lookin tight in that) and her girlfriend in that movie had some pretty long-ass braided hair. I thought it would be neat as as a texture (kinda sexy too). As for the other chick, not sure I'm diggin' the short hair. Might just have to go bald on her - I don't know.

I was looking back at the concept sketches, and I really like the one in the middle on the left. That one looks very natural and graceful. I'd keep that one in mind for another one sometime.

Well, originally, I meant something more like this:

In this, her weight would be more on her right arm, than her left, which wouldn't make it that uncomfortable. BUT, in going for more of a caress than a poke; maybe you could raise the wrist area some so the back of her hand (in that, I mean the opposite side from the palm) is facing forward, toward the other girl's heel which - like you said - would have the girl-on-top's knuckle area pointed more at the ground, somewhat matching the curvature of the other girl's crotch.

Ah, I see what you mean now, O. That's more like the girl sittin on the palm of her hand... hmm :ohyahbaby: I definitely like the arm bent like that at least.

I got one more version I'll post when I get home. It keeps the arm straight - just changes the hand.

Ah, good eye, Moonbeam - that was actually the original pose that started it all. I liked it alot as well. What ends up happening a lot is that I'll start out with a gesture like that, then loose some of that gracefulness as I start refining the drawing. In this case I ended up changing the pose because as I started to work out the detail, I realized that the figure was actually out of proportion.

Sketches always look better because our minds will "complete" something that is only suggested and not necessarily there. It's kind of the same way that one might find another person sexier wearing something skimpy rather than completely naked - it's the mystery of what's hidden beneath the fabric.

Ok, two more concepts regarding that @*&! hand! LOL

While I'm kinda leaning more towards one on the right, I'm starting to think that maybe this part of the drawing is a bit too erotic. I like it when it's noticed sort of later on, like Burns did. Or even if it's ambiguous enough for it to be interpreted differently by the viewer.

I see what you mean... yeah, I guess it'll depend on how much you want to "give away" rather than have the observer discover it on their own. It'll be good either way since you're the artist, but I think more subtly is sexier... :ohyahbaby:

I wonder which most cleverest person on here suggested the lesbian picture. :D

Ok, yes, it's been a while since I've updated the thread. I'm off of work this week, so what do I do... work! LOL! Well, at least this is something I do for myself and enjoy. So... without futher adew (sp?)

Step II - test piece
Even though I'm calling this a test piece, it's really going to be a final piece to give away to that someone that it's "commisioned" for. I figure I'll do another version either different size or with some minor changes to the pose, so it will still be a unique piece. This will also help me figure out the lighting should I decide to do that "rays through canopy of trees" look and figure out how I'm going to do the textures and background.

StepIIb: progress
Once I get the hair done I should be able to breeze through the rest (I think). I'm starting to chicken out about doing the whole rays of light thing :( - I just think it's complicated enough trying to see what's going on because of the markings and the pose.

The only criticism I have is that the shoulders on the left most figure are a bit too masculine set. Being a male, I have similar issues with drawing females, but maybe it was intentional (read;butch).
