Music that you can hear in you head...

Art is music, vice versa, and I've been kind of interested about this. I am just wondering if any people on this forum can hear highly original and creative music in your head. This isn't limited to say, classical music, but I wouldn't be too trusting to say, a techno-beat or such (but nonetheless, I am just curious).

As for me, I can hear many ranges of instruments in my head, and usually within a good pitch (I'm learning to develop a better pitch, perhaps near-perfect or perfect, so I can transpose thought-to-paper), and my styles go from guitar rock to classical, some baroque, and a few others. I can usually hear all of the instruments at once, and pick out certain ones to hear them closely. It's not that bad, as when I'm alone, I don't go crazy--sort of like being somewhere you don't belong (or just being alone), and hearing the radio when you want. When I want happy, I can go happy-sounding, and more melodies go to major. Same thing with sad, where I can go to more minor tones.

I'm also seeing if I can develop a technique where I can induce a lucid dream by this method. Not everyone has this, but an indication to a slight possession may be: ie, you can recall most if not all a song by listening to it once. Anything more than 10 minutes is highly impressive. An hour or more, and you're VERY good.

But like I said, just post any comments or anything if you guys have this sort of thing.

It's a Grateful Dead answer, so I don't know if you'll hold it in much higher regard than techno for the purpose of your question, but yes. In spite of being almost totally freestyle, Dead music is pretty complex when you know what you're hearing, and can almost be "arranged" classical-style in your head to produce music they haven't actually played, but could only be theirs. I hear my own Dead music all the time.

Sometimes I can 'hear music' in background noises too, I'll find a beat in the traffic noise or little melodies in crickets chirping, but it's fleeting, like an LD. A shift in concentration & I'll lose it regardless if it's still there.

I think I get what you're saying, but I've seldom had chance to sit down and hear these things , which is sad since sometimes there are some very nice beats and such.

But I geuss I was being a little to blunt to techno-styles (I wanted to say rap, but the idea is still there), since I suppose one could develop a very unique song with such a style, without being to linear to the genre.

Yeah, i hear it. I can think of jammin toons (word), but actually translating them into real sounds is hard. I mean I can hear really good noises, but finding an instrument that will acutally reproduce that noise is probably impossible...or I have just never heard that paticular instrument.

When you refer to dead songs, I’m not 100 sure what you are referring to, the Grateful Dead band from the 60s? I enjoy their music but not sure about their esoteric name, insight would be greatly appreciated . I’m not sure about hearing fully constructed music as such, that is fully created in perfection. When you are into music, I’m sure the idea is to create sounds in your head via a subconscious voice. Like Linkin Park and Depech Mode etc. When I tune my Guitar I usually pick up the tone of the strings, or when I try and construct a song in my head the tune comes out when I practice my guitar. This is quite an interesting post.

Ah, and for anyone interested, I suggest listening to as wide a variety of music as possible. Your subconscious repitoire increases much with every new song.

Seems from you've all been saying, that many of you have it in different degree...just wondering, how intelligent is everyone who's had this ability? I'm interested to know if, for example(and this is if you're smart), that this factor increases intelligence, or one's intelligence affects the factor.

I don’t personally think intelligence has anything to do with the subconscious mind, only on a consciousness level. Does the subconscious have a concept of intellect? Personally I think It depends on your perspective, someone might agree with myself and say sitting on the toilet greatly increases your waking intelligence. Every facet of your life affects your intelligence, I’m not 100% sure of the word increase, that implies a level in which you climb your amplify. Intelligence if it had a form is circular, everything attaches itself through interpretation therefore intelligence is an individual message, not a subconscious.

I do agree that listening to different kinds of music opens up your perceptions.

To answer the questions somewhat, I do not hear music symphonically. I would consider the ability to hear and transpose a symphonic arrangement a true gift. Most musicians are one step at a time creators. We lay one track and then add what we think goes with what we have done.

Specifically in my head I hear specific licks, lines, or phrasing that I want to play. Typically, if I hear the music first, I am not playing my instrument (eg: taking a shower, driving my car, etc). When I do play, I do not think about what I am playing nor do I think what I want to play, unless I have just played something that I did not like. When I dream, I hear the best music, IMO. Some of my favorite sounding work has come to me while I was asleep or just waking up. The closer I am to being asleep, the more creative I am and the more the 'juices flow', if you will.

To date I have not gotten an entire song while dreaming. I have had them, but not been able to pull them out of the dream. Usually I get about 4 to 12 measures before it fades.

Go for 16 measures...less may even be enough. Usually the song just comes to you after that point. And remember, it doesn't have to be complicated, it just has to sound good.

AABA style can get you going. Start the phrase, then repeat it (possibly with other musical accompaniment to accentuated certain parts), then you can mix things up a bit with B (ie, play the melody a step lower), and final finish with A again. It's good in moderation when creating music.

Entering into hynagogic imagery I somtimes can play a guitar like Hendrix and a piano like Beethoven -or so it seems
Either way it is a great feeling, moreover when I can lead it into a lucid dream thus conducting the music!

But I am curious to know what state you are talking about during these stents where you here the music. Fully awake?

Yeah man, no dreams or trace-states needed. I hear it on the bus, while I'm doing homework, anywhere. The only time it shuts off is when I really need to get something important done. I can also hear music and piece out the different layers after it stops playing (violin, guitar, piano, etc.). However, I'm a real mess when it comes to everything things like remember to bring a few dollars, my phone. And I'm really unorganized, too.

I was pretty screwed though, because my parents never thought to take me for piano lessons or anything of the sort. But I figure, I wouldn't have the will to learn composition if otherwise (I see this a lot in other people). It's kind of ironic if you think about it...

And yes, this works with many kinds of music too. It's not limited to "official orchestras" or something like that.

Also: I've had one semi-lucid dream while conducting. I believe I was conducting Beethoven's 9th. Those dreams are really awesome though

Hey, just skimmed through the post and thought I could contribute.

I aslo hear arrangements in my head of all different kinds of music. While I'm fortunate enough to have some music background and play a few instruments, the most aggrivating thing I find is not having an instrument nearby to translate and record the parts out into the real world. Now I keep my laptop with me at work and launch an application called GarageBand if I ever come up with something I really like. It has a virtual keyboard in it that you can play and assign all kinds of different instruments to. It's great for arranging music.

I have found that early in the morning (usually on my way to work) is when my mind is in this "music mode" the most. I'm wondering if it has to do with dreams that I have that I can't remember. Just this morning, in fact, I had the US National Anthem going through my head. Even after I woke up I kept going over it again, and again! Weird!

Anyway, you might want to pick up somekind of instrument that's quick and easy to learn - a cheap little keyboard - just to get some tones going. That way you can try and translate what you hear in your head and record pieces of it. You could always play it for someone who is more musically inclined and have them clean it up for you. You never know what might be lurking in your head - an orchestral masterpiece?!

Well I do know how the play some piano (I have one in my room, electric), but I wished I had started earlier. Today at my friends house, I was playing video games, but I noticed the piano and just started playing some different songs I knew. Then I just thought of a great melody, and went from there. I remember about the first minute of it, because the rest was improvisional. Only the melody itself I thought naturally.

I did wake up hearing about 13 seconds of a violin concerto, so that was nice. But hearing the alarm broke the thought up

I can play piano and guitar fairly well and I am pretty much obsessed with creating good music. I'm a perfectionist though. I have at times woken up with, what at the time to me, were brilliant melodies. But I forgot them after a few minutes of consciousness.

I intend to have some LD's where I summon instruments and write music... because in this dream consciousness I am much more creative.

Is there a possibilty you could get one of those little voice recorders to put by your bed and opon waking up humm into the recorder the melody.

I was going to get one of those for the purpose of saying my thoughts and dreams rather than having to write them down.

well yeah i do hear music in my head when im writing it.. sometimes it takes just minutes.. sometimes it takes numerous hours... i just write it down...but i still cant seem to be able to open up my head completely to let out all the songs in my head... i just feel like ive only written down a TINY fragment of what i have...
but then again...it might not be time for them all to come yet.. maybe im just too young for them to come..(this is one of the reasons im interested in lucidity, i want to at least try and tell my subconsciousness to let more break out. or at least ''go there'' to pick some up myself)

I always wake up with a song in my head...and I end up singing it until I can get on the Lappy or whip out my CD player and actually hear it again.

That tends to happen to me a lot, too. The song(s) will be stuck until I listen to it.... like this morning, I had practically the whole 2-disc soundtrack of "The Phantom of the Opera" stuck in my head. So I listened to both discs while cleaning my room (I'm hopelessly obsessed; check my DJ)
