      Deconstructing Music

I was looking back to what I'd learned when I took music at school, specifically when we had to listen to a track and pull it apart and describe it in terms of the elements of music. (this list was from wiki)

      Melody
      Pitch
      Rhythm
      Harmony
      Consonance and Dissonance
      Dynamics
      Texture
      Structure

And now Im writing my own music, well I'm my own worst critic. I was trying to think if anyone has used the elements to critique their own compositions to improve them?

Like is there an effective way that you've been able to "troubleshoot" something you have written yourself?

When we analyse with those elements we pull elements into those catagories from the music, but do you think its possible to write by pulling things OUT of those catagories into your music?

      Just some thoughts

I think pretty much everybody would use those elements to troubleshoot their music, even if they don't realise they are doing it. I mean what you have listed is pretty much what makes music up.

I will say, for me, i try not to analyze my music initially, when listening back. It kidn of feels counter-intuitive to the way i write. All i'm worried about is whether or not my pieces of music are cohesive, as whole entities. Things will always grab my attention, sometimes for good reasons, other times for not so good reasons. If it's a not so good reason i'll simply figure out what it is i don't like about it (which is generally an instantaneous recognition) and attempt to figure out how i can fix it. But i don't necessarily think of the problems in terms of those elements listed, and i certianly don't listen out for how each of those elements specifically fits within the music.

yeah, agreed. If i dislike something, ill know it right away. Your example of cohesion though, is probably because the incoherent part doesnt fit in with what you've done with elements of music either side of it.

I reckon its possible to explain why something doesnt work according to those elements. Which is what got me thinking that maybe then its possible to create things that DO WORK by using the elements.

Or maybe after a piece is composed that you like, it could be possible to go back analyse it with those elements, and see if you can make it even more coherent? You could maybe make good music even richer.
