      My conworld - Lizella

So I decided I might as well post up crap about my conworld, as nerdy as such a thing would seem. I'll put up more shizz as I find some free time to work out the kinks with my concultures. Remember, any input, comments or suggestions (esp. from Kushna Mufeed, who has posted up a conworld of his own) are welcome.

But the first order of business is this. I've been calculating things like how many hours there are to a day, how many days to a week, how many weeks to a month, and how many months to a year, etc., and after all was said and done, the Lizellan year equates to 1071 Lizellan days (31 hours) - roughly 1383 Earth days...which would make the year (and more importantly, the seasons throughout it) about 3.8 times longer than on Earth. So, imagine the Lizellan winter lasting about 11 and a half months.

"Is this plausible?", is what I'm asking. The dominant race is very much human in many aspects, with there being a few subtle differences, plus the fact that the average Lizellan lifespan is about 139 (180 Earth) years. With this in mind, would such a people - whose culture has evolved slightly past medieval times, in terms of technology - survive 11 month long freezing winters and 11 month long drought-ridden summers at a time, or would it be too much?

Thanks in advance for your constructive input.

Yes, that's plausible. Any planet that has a different semi-major axis (orbit around the Sun) and orbital speed will have different "year" lengths. For example, Saturn's orbital period (time it takes to do a full rotation around the sun) is 10,832 days, or 29.66 years on Earth.

As for a race surviving extended seasons ... if life exists there, then the life would adapt to it and wouldn't be harmed.

EDIT: By the way, what exactly is a "conworld?" I've never heard of this before.

      Muchas gracias for your input.

Conworld short for "constructed world", i.e., a world that you make up, mainly for the purposes of story writing - as is my purpose - although some do it just for fun. I'm somewhat of a language nerd, and thus have started making many conlangs (atrificially constructed languages), so I figured it wouldn't hurt to think about the dynamics of the conworld itself as well as the concultures contained within. It's really fun stuff, when you get right down to it.

Now that I've got the plausibility of this world set more or less in stone [unless there are those of you out there who wish to dispute Vampyre's assertions? Debate is welcomed.], I'll start working on more detailed aspects of the people.

...At a later date, though. My job is ass, and is thus causing me much sleep deprivation, so I've been too tired to actually work on anything lately that involves my own personal interests.

This seems very plausable. Vampyre summed it up pretty good.

      Very plausible and very interesting.
The plants and animal life would have adapted to harsher conditions. I imagine coming up with your own ecosystem would be quite enjoyable! The plants would be drought and winter resistant... animals would be sturdier having a richer coat during the cold months and shedding down to ??? bare skin- no, they would roast... reflective "scales"?
I hope you get some rest and work on this soon so you can share the finished product with us

If you like building things like this, I might recommend trying the game Spore. You can terraform, reshape, and populate planets and stuff. It's pretty neat.

Yeah. Spore is an awesome game and I recommend it as well. You can't get into the details of your conworld, though (as in length of days, the civilizations themselves, or the ecosystem beyond transplanting pre-existing plants and animals).

Another thing you might be interested in is pen & paper games, like Rifts (my preference) or D&D. Since everything's imaginary it's boundless and you can create whatever you want.

I made an interactive map a while ago, although I haven't finished it. You can see it at www.ball-breaker.com/Mendison.html It is by no means completed and probably has a few things I'd change, but you can still get the idea. And it was rather simple to make, just using Flash.

^Yeah, I've actually just recently gotten into tabletop RPGs, specifically ones based in the Final Fantasy and Star Wars universes, which I find immensely enjoyable when playing with friends (although they're not nearly as sophisticated as Rifts). I have a record of each of our scenarios, since they tend to be so interesting, I can't help but think they would make good story material.

Cool map, by the way. Did you intend for there to be so many islands on the coastal regions, or was that a result of trying to make a realistic, (North American) East Coast-esque system of sand bars and such? Either way, I like the concept of how a race would develop with such a segregated environment as islands.

The idea behind the dimension (or conworld) I made was that the atmosphere thinned out and the planet started to "die," but magical spheres were created to preserve pockets of it. This map shows one of those pockets. They have no way of contacting anyone outside of it and aren't even sure if other pockets exist. As a result of the whole dying atmosphere/planet, the landscape was ravaged and resulted in all the islands.

Awesome. Whereas your conworld deals with a theme of isolation, mine deals more with the exact opposite - international relations: War, diplomacy, etc., although there is still more than enough room for magic and other forms of supernatural subject matter. But I'll get to that later...

Again, I'd like to thank everybody for your helpful comments.

Lately I haven't done much ironing out of the details of the conworld itself, but I've been messing around with a conlang - the language spoken throughout the western continent of Azuni. If anyone's interested, they can see my progress here.

      You are my hero
I'm happy to see someone else on Gaia (though I've not logged on for months) I go by Xyleisha_Rae

The language looks amazing. I wish I could work on my "Cipher" some more. I have samples of it (in the early phase) in a DV Favorite thread "samples of handwriting" or some such.
It has over 35,000 symbols and is made up of phrasology (sp), wordology etc. I redid english words to a more phonetic system.

It started before my teenage years because my mom often read my diary. I wanted to keep her out of my private life, so I came up with a basic code. But then I fixated on making it "unbreakable". I worked on it for a decade + and then my kids got into my folders and lost several pages

I was devestated and heart broken, so I packed it away and never worked on it again.

But now I feel inspired... I haven't the youth or imagination to pursue it again though (nor the heart). When I was a kid, it was my plan to teach the language to my children and have it serve as a sort of heirloom. I wanted to create my own culture and holidays that would be celebrated by future decendants. But then again, everyone was going to be tattooed on the pad of their thumb too.
What can I say, I had quite the imagination when I was younger.

Your conworld sounds amazing. Keep up the creativity!!!! I'm 34 years old now and addicted to video games, television and the internet. Out of everything I COULD regret, one of the things I regret the most is having lost my imagination.
I had a natural talent in my youth, but through disuse I've all but completely lost it.

^Thanks so much. I've never really had anyone told me I've inspired them before. In turn, your words inspire me to keep working at it.

I don't believe you've lost your talent. It's probably just dormant - that tends to happen to one's creative hobbies and such when they go untouched for so long. I have to admit that for a long while, I haven't written so much as a page of material for any of my books; I would just shrug it off as writer's block. But I've slowly begun to realize that it's all still there, I just need to take the time out of my day to at least try to tap into it again. It seems to be working currently, and maybe it'll work for you too.

And I dunno about you, but I find video games give me the fuel I need for the keeping the flame that is my creativity and my imagination burning bright (along with reading books and watching movies, of course). Trust me - once a creative soul, always a creative soul, and nothing can take that from you.

      You're welcome.
      And thanks for the encouragement.
Video games don't inspire me because video games have BECOME my "life" lol. I have no time for deep, creative thinking. I have so many problems with anxiety that I've learned to keep my mind full of trivial things.
But I feel creative tonight And it's all because of your conworld and Gaia lol (spending an hour dressing an avie has that effect on me )

Here's the current Lizellan language I'm working on - Thēs'isk. I haven't really done much yet aside from put in phonetic values and such, but it'll be up shortly, along with the new alphabet that goes with it. Actually, I'm thinking that the Thēs'isk alphabet will pretty much set the stage for a "standard script", like the Latin alphabet is on our world.

More info on the conworld itself to be posted as soon as I get home from work...

EDIT: Okay, so tonight I was just too damn tired. Curse you, work...
