      Artist/Designer Prices

Are there any designers or illustrators or otherwise commercial artists here who can help me with figuring out pricing?

I did a sign for a Vet Clinic, it probably took me 10 hours including all rough's and I did several different designs he could choose from etc. Plus refining the one he chose.

Do I set an hourly rate for these kind of things, I've only ever sold normal paintings before and I don't know how I should do it.

Would be great if you could offer input or experience etc.

      Cheers.

I wouldn't recommend billing by the hour, just for the total project. Although you can bill any additional work or revisions by the hour, but the project should start out with an agreed upon total. I would be able to offer more help but to be honest the last time I did any freelance design work was back in 2005 so I don't know what it's ok to charge people these days.

      Hm, ok thanks Aquanina!
I've figured out a price, not sure how good it is though but I'm just gonna go with it.

      Afternote I suppose ~

For a physical sign/store banner that will be prominent, I've charged $400. Really, the price should be decided on first. They make an offer, or you make an offer and work from there. It's really not so much what is 'fair' but what you would do the work for, and what they would pay for the work to be done. Some designers charge thousands and thousands, some charge not even a hundred.
You merely have to change your point of view slightly, and then that glass will sparkle when it reflects the light.

Thanks Cloud. Future reference I spose hey hehe

I was gonna charge $150 but it is for a family member so I decided to go with $75 (even though I want more! lol and it's definitely worth more but oh well). Coz they do free stuff at the clinic for our dogs all the time.

I figure it's good practice to go about this job professionally and I didn't think about setting a price first. Good info for next time, so thanks to both of you for that.

I even made an invoice, all in all, I think it's been a good experience.

And I'm kinda rambling now so thanks!

Yeah I probly would charge 300-400 for anybody else, but seeing as they're family it doesn't seem right.
