      Poem- Fear

      Fear

      It lurks about in darkness
      Looking for a meal
      Sensing for an opening
      in your soul to steal

A small tear in the fabric
      that keeps a man sane
Something in which to crawl through,
      prey upon the brain

It hunts now in the darkness
      stalks not with the eyes
      for weakness it can harness
      and it finally finds

Weakness in the form of doubt
      Neglected pain past
      hidden in the recesses
      It makes its kill fast

Lustful eyes light up the dark
      casting shadows far
      Feeding on uncertainty
      quickening your heart

      You summon your defenses
      all you understand
with the monster in the dark
      you are in its hands

      Now you are its possession
      you are now its prey
      in the midst of submission
      bow your head and pray

      Ablaze now through the blackness
      burning through its chest
      truth lights the unhallowed halls
      beauty at its best

      Truth answered the wretched call
      Truth lit up the night
Truth to fill in weakened holes
      Truth will fight the fight
      Jesus of Suburbia likes this.
The geat blessing of mankind are within us and within our reach; but we shut our eyes, and like people in the dark, we fall foul upon the very thing we search for, without finding it.

      Weakness (uncertainty) --> Fear

      Fear (questions)--- > Truth

      Truth>Fear

Is this about spiritual blindness? Fear being the devil, truth being the holy spirit?
So the holy spirit comes to you, allowing you to see(metaphorically and literally) God?

Curious for how you meant it to be interpreted.

Weakness in the form of doubt
      Neglected pain past
      hidden in the recesses
It makes its kill fast Hmm.... I like this but there's something about it I can't find out that's just.... Wrong....

Lustful eyes light up the dark
      casting shadows far
      Feeding on uncertainty
quickening your heart Awesome but, far and heart don't really rhyme. I'm not saying that's a bad thing but.... Yeah....

      You summon your defenses
      all you understand
with the monster in the dark
you are in its hands Awesome. No comment.

      Now you are its possession
      you are now its prey
      in the midst of submission
bow your head and pray I just feel the need to say that homophones don't make good rhymes. Otherwise, awesome.

      Ablaze now through the blackness
      burning through its chest
      truth lights the unhallowed halls
beauty at its best What does this have to do with fear??

      Truth answered the wretched call
      Truth lit up the night
Truth to fill in weakened holes
Truth will fight the fight Again, sort of random. Nothing to do with fear....

I never like explaining poetry I write because by its very nature it begs to be interpreted. However, thanks for the insightful replies.

In my view, fear finds its way (steals its way) into our souls, hearts, being because we hide the openings (the weaknesses.. thing we 'sweep under the rug') rather than identifying them. Like a leaky pipe behind the wall, the damage is extensive because it is hidden. When it is exposed, the leak can be fixed and cared for. Light is shed upon it... through the chest of the beast (fear). The light is truth and truth destroys fear.

Or, it could mean anything you would like for it to mean.

This was the original free-form thought before I edited it into a quick poem:

It lurks about in the darkness looking for something to feed upon
      Some opening
Some small tear in the fabric that keeps man and woman whole
It's stomach groans with hunger as it becomes ravenous, delerious (sp), desperate for a meal

In the pitch darkness, the eyes cannot perceive (SP) but something does... something senses...

A weakness in the skin, in the fabric of your reality, your assuredness, your sanity

UNCERTAINTY and doubt... FINALLY! Yes, yes, vulnerability!
His giant head lowered in hungry rage, he butts against the weakened spot again and again

Until at last, it has its way with you! It cuts you down and consumes you and you belong to the beast
in this darkness forever... it's in your core... it's at the root of you

Now you are afraid of him as he feeds on you because you denied and neglected the opening
Unable to hurt you if you face him because then you can see him... from your eyes, light

In the light, he has no opening... it is only in the dark recesses of the neglected
regions of the soul that he hunts his prey

The nasties that man craves not to see is where the openings reside
