The one palce I would try and be as unique as possible is how the technology works, or at least what clever applications there are for the advances in tech. People love that in science fiction stories.

For one, I plan to do a lot with gravity. (I.E., Going into how the artificial gravity in parts of the ship work, and going into how lots of the ship doesn't have gravity, and the adaptations made for that.
As for detective stories: CYBERPUNK FOR THE WIN! Neuromancer, SnowCrash, Otherland, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?... The list goes on and on and on.

It's kinda interesting... I want a continuation now:panic:... btw I'm addicted to manga and while I'm reading the one that you write I can picture it out already and am really looking forward to read the whole story of it:D I hope am not gonna be disappointed to the ending just like the other books that I have read.
