I've always wanted to learn how to paint pictures, especially of landscapes, and things and places I see in my dreams. I know that some people are naturals, but I am not, and would love to hear whatever you guys can tell me about it. :D

Don't sink all your money into gouache or oil paints before you determine your talent level. I have several hundred dollars worth of unused painting paraphernalia, leftover from a time long ago, before I realized I prefer to sketch/draw with pencils and conte crayon and such
To create depth, use cool tones for far-away items and warm tones for things close up. Mix complementary colors (i.e. red and green, purple and yellow, blue and orange) to create shadow rather than black- it looks more realistic. When mixing two colors, add dark paint to light paint rather than the other way around. Dark paint tends to "eat" lighter paint, and you'll end up wasting a lot. And, if you start painting something and think it's a failure, don't stop. Keep painting. It may turn out to be a completely different picture than you originally intended, but much better.
Good luck! :D
