We should know by now we can't trust the government. Why don't they hand out potassium iodide tablets just in case?

Anyway, I suggest getting some potassium iodide if you live where the radioactive plume could go.

"Itís hard to say how much fallout will fall here from overseas, like Japan or Iran or North Korea, until it does, but itís very unlikely that it would ever be enough to require Americans to utilize fallout shelters to survive it..."

Thank you for the links. Very informative.

      Being prepared is not panicking.

Panicking is blinding running in fear. Being prepared is wise. Denying real danger is pointless.

I am a veteran of the US Coast Guard. We trained for all types of emergencies, as does the entire military. No one called us paranoid, alarmists, fearmongers or said we were panicking while were were running our drills. I felt good knowing that myself and my shipmates were well prepared for any situation that could arise.

Buying a fire extinguisher for your kitchen prudent, though you may never have a fire in your home. Spending a little on potassium iodide is worth it, just in case.

It's funny how if you do the same exact thing, and you are not in a uniform, then people make derisive comments.

All I am doing is sharing with you information on being prepared for emergencies. It's a good idea to have two weeks of storable food and water for many types of emergencies, such as earthquakes, hurricanes, tsunamis, flooding, job loss, economic disasters, or other man-made disasters.

Everyone has opinions, and is entitled to their opinions. That's fine.

I am not trying to convince anyone of anything, nor am I saying the apocalypse is upon us. I am just sharing information on preparedness.

It is a pretty simple concept. Basically you want as much 'stuff' between you and the source of radiation as possible. The stuff doesn't matter, but the more massive the better. Just be careful nothing collapses on top of you, if you throw heavy objects on top of tables or stuff.

Potassium iodide is pretty cheap, and you can just get some to throw into a first aid kit, so it is no big deal. Just don't be like the people in California that rushed out to buy it at 300 dollars a bottle. People panicked and did that and it was stupid. Normally they are like 10 dollars, so if you live in California, where people panicked, wait a few months then get it.

Like he said, it never hurts to be prepared. There are a lot of things that when prepared for are easily survivable, and when not prepared can easily kill you. The last thing you want is to die in a situation you could of survived in.

If all the land around you has turned into a nuclear wasteland, surviving might be the less desirable option...

      Correct.

But, in Japan there is no nuclear wasteland, yet people are receiving radiation.

Radiation levels drop off very quickly in a lot of cases. Especially in nuclear bombs, where they give off high levels of radiation but then give off much lower levels. The point of this stuff, is that you survive the most deadly radiation, and then you can escape.

Right. But, this is not a nuclear bomb we are dealing with, but a radioactivity coming out of a nuclear power plant.

That's pretty much what Alex Jones does is convey fear. Not to mention over half of what he says is questionable.

I disagree with your first statement. I feel the mass media's focus is to convey fear. Of course, that's subjective. As far as the second statement, he routinely states, "Don't take my word for it. Do the research for yourself."

Anyway, does anyone have anything to say about Nuclear Radiation Survival?

Would anyone like to provide information on this subject from other sources?

There's a lot of fearmongering out there about the dangers of nuclear, which stems from it being so mysterious to most people. If you're a mile or so from a fission bomb you're actually unlikely to experience any notable effects. After all the fuss about Three Mile Island the increase in cancers due to the radiation wasn't even detectable, and the main health effect of those in the Chernobyl zone was actually found to be the mental effect of all the fear. By far more people have died in coal mines.

      Thanks for the links!

I wondered about the potassium iodide and looked it up:

I have two problems with the article. It states that radiation will not come to the US in dangerous amounts. Of course, it's impossible to say what will happen in the future with 100% accuracy, which makes me question the entire thing.

Well what you need to know is what way the wind is blowing. Usually all the radiation gets trapped in small particles and are blown about by the wind. Even in nuclear blasts the radiation kicks up a lot of dirt and it is the dirt that becomes radioactive, then the dirt falls back down. Almost all of the radiation is going to go the direction the wind is blowing.

If the wind is blowing away from you, you are safe. If the window is blowing towards you, you are in danger. The last thing you want to do is escape in the direction the window is blowing, because then you are moving into the radiation zone.

I agree with you, about that. I almost didn't reference it because of that. The reason I decided to was because of the purpose of the potassium iodide and thyroid.

That was good information, but I have not found any information about when to take it! Everything just says, "ask your doctor."

I have been taking mcg does of it in a multivitamin/mineral supplement from GNC, and also I have been taking kelp.
