Tell me about the AP Psychology / university psychology course.

I'm taking AP Psychology next year, for grade 12.

Has anyone here taken it? If so, what was it like, and what kind of content is in it (psychology, duh, but the specifics)?

You'll be introduced to things like moral development and how we think language is learned, some things about social dynamics, what parts of the brain have to do with what functions in the body and our thinking, and so on. I can't recall right off the top of my head all the specifics, but it's a fun class.. Or it will be if the person teaching it presents the information well. It's not particularly difficult either since it's like an introductory course.

Thanks Invader. And I'm also glad to hear that it's not too hard of a course!

I think all AP Psych courses are different, even though the goal is supposed to be passing the exam. I would say you're going to be presented with the basic principles of all of psychology. I can look into my old notebook and get more specific if you want me to. I had an excellent teacher and we ended up getting really specific with everything. I really didn't need to know so much information for the actual exam, but I was really glad we learned a lot in the course. If you're planning on majoring in Psych, definitely take the class seriously. When you take the-next-level Psych course in uni, they assume you know general Psych knowledge forwards and backwards (at least this is how it is in my college). I'm really glad I took this course the last semester of my senior year, so the knowledge was pretty fresh when I jumped into Psych courses.

One annoying thing I found was that we had to learn all the theories that had been disproven as well. I mean it's useful and all..but yeah.

It's not a hard course or exam, since as Invader said, it's intro level. But again, you can get a 5 on the exam without knowing all the information thoroughly (like really specific), however if you plan on majoring, know the information thoroughly.

The exam is rediculously easy. 99.9% of it doesn't even discuss consciousness itself....Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung are barely mentioned either. Most of it is nonsensical useless information and vocabulary, if you are trying to truly learn how the mind works, this course will not teach it. Although, there are always useful things you can learn about it like the structure of the brain, etc.

Is there anything in particular that you are trying to learn?
Seeing that we are on a dream site, you are probably interested in dreaming. Well, this course barely touches that, only going over the stages of sleep and some terrible theories on why we dream and sleep

I'm taking it because I'd rather take Psych than Western Civ... I can't stand history. BORING stuff. Boring, boring, boring.

As for what I'm planning on going into, I want to be a visual effects artist; it's a slightly far-off subject compared to psychology, but I also have interests in acting. I have a feeling this course could help me if I ever decide to take it up as a more serious hobby. Regarding specific stuff I want to learn about, well, I want to learn a bit about how the human mind works in social situations and about the brain.

      Thanks for the information guys!

Psych was fun, you'll definitely enjoy it more than western civ...unfortunately this course tells you little on how the mind works, I think 400 micrograms of LSD in one sitting will teach you more about your mind than this course ever will! The brain is a bit tricky in this course as well, because scientists still aren't entirely sure if one section of the brain is entirely responsible for a particular action so like many brain structures share the same actions. Basically this course made me have more questions about the mind at the end of it than I did at the beginning of it. Good luck!

That sounds like lots of fun, actually! I'll just ask lots of questions and put the teacher on the spot, haha. xD
