I was just about to ask you about music history aswell, i'm doing it in music class. |

Ask me about music -- from creating sounds, to music theory, to production, to getting the tone you want, to what equipment to buy. |

I play bass guitar mainly (several thousand hours) but I can play piano and guitar. I used to play all the orchestral string instruments, but have forgotten since i'm so used to the EADG configuration rather than the CGDA configuration. |
|
I could tell you about Bass Guitar history though. Haha. |

Do you often use different varieties of compression or eq on the same channel when you mix a tune? Like an SSL Eq, or waves RenQ or a parametric EQ... when do you use each one, and do you ever use multiple eq's in one channel? Same question applies to compression, because i've noticed different tone qualities with different versions of Waves compressors, like the SSL or RComp. |

I use mostly stock VSTs. I use FL Studio and have POD Farm and Karma FX. Often with Film scores I'll end up using Karma's EQ (full range) and their reverb and filter plugins (awesome verb). |
|
Forgot to mention I always run with an XLR-1/4" out of my GK 700RB-II head to my POD GX for recording. POST EQ mode. It's heavily EQ'd on my amp head, then EQ'd further on my DAW. It often sounds really crappy without a cab which is why you need to EQ it further in a DAW. Then compress it of course. |
|
Totally forgot to mention this, but I recommened and love the Fruity Parametric EQ 2 for it's extreme versatility. It's not just frequency bands with sliders. It's got 7-bands (or 2 or three or one for filters/shelving if you like) which you can move freely on an XY plane. Any band can be any frequency and any gain or relase. Only bands 1 and 7 roll-off sharply, whereas the rest blend. Often I'll find myself sliding band 6 BEFORE band 5 or something to get the perfect curve. |

Thanks for the feedback (no pun intended ) |

For my drums I always use superior drummer -- so I use the built in compressor on different channels. |
|
Hmm. I'll be interested to hear it so I can get a grasp on your mixing style. |

well it seems I never finished it. Haha. Uploading the unfinished bit now. It's just a bass track over a regular song though that i've been talking about. I'm also going to upload a song from scratch, using POD Farm and Superior Drummer. No real amps or preamps involved. |
|
Bass track isn't playing. This can't be good.. I hate FL sometimes. |

A week of work just disappeared.. D: |

Needs a bump. |

I'm wondering about key changes within a song. That is, changes of the key, not changes that are key. |

Dude, props on the song! I use superior drummer too... do you actually do the playing yourself for the drums and then quantize, or do you write the rhythms into the program? Also, the vocals are very well EQ'd, but you can't hear them very well. Did you record this yourself? And did you do the mixing yourself? The production quality is actually quite good. |

I don't have an electric kit so I have to punch the notes in. |
