      Ask me about music.

Ask me about music -- from creating sounds, to music theory, to production, to getting the tone you want, to what equipment to buy.

Note that I don't know much about music history. Except for bass guitar history. (which has only really been around for 50 years or so.)

I play bass guitar mainly (several thousand hours) but I can play piano and guitar. I used to play all the orchestral string instruments, but have forgotten since i'm so used to the EADG configuration rather than the CGDA configuration.

      I can also produce/record/engineer.

Do you often use different varieties of compression or eq on the same channel when you mix a tune? Like an SSL Eq, or waves RenQ or a parametric EQ... when do you use each one, and do you ever use multiple eq's in one channel? Same question applies to compression, because i've noticed different tone qualities with different versions of Waves compressors, like the SSL or RComp.

I use mostly stock VSTs. I use FL Studio and have POD Farm and Karma FX. Often with Film scores I'll end up using Karma's EQ (full range) and their reverb and filter plugins (awesome verb).

As for bass, I tend to use the POD Farm rackmount Compressor with the Fruity Parametric EQ 2. Sometime's i'll throw in their Parametric EQ 1 or another Parametric 2 for touch ups.

I always use the POD Farm Rackmount Compressor impulse on bass tracks (I discovered this only after my most recent cover that it actually helps).

Forgot to mention I always run with an XLR-1/4" out of my GK 700RB-II head to my POD GX for recording. POST EQ mode. It's heavily EQ'd on my amp head, then EQ'd further on my DAW. It often sounds really crappy without a cab which is why you need to EQ it further in a DAW. Then compress it of course.

Totally forgot to mention this, but I recommened and love the Fruity Parametric EQ 2 for it's extreme versatility. It's not just frequency bands with sliders. It's got 7-bands (or 2 or three or one for filters/shelving if you like) which you can move freely on an XY plane. Any band can be any frequency and any gain or relase. Only bands 1 and 7 roll-off sharply, whereas the rest blend. Often I'll find myself sliding band 6 BEFORE band 5 or something to get the perfect curve.

Thanks for the feedback (no pun intended )

I guess I didn't really mean what brand of compressors and eq's do you mean, as I use the engineering industry standard plugins- Waves... I just mean like what types of EQ do you use, and where in the channel plugin chain in your synthesizer do you put them, and in what order? For example, when to use a graphic, versus parametric, or a 4 band versus 6 or 7 band EQ, and when to use a solid state logic analog based compression versus a digital compressor with different circuitry emulation options available. Or does that make that much of a difference? When I use a 4 band EQ on the cymbals channel of a drum track, for example, if I put an SSL compressor on at 3:1 at -17t and +5 makeup, I might get a much more prominent, present clear sound, but when I use a digital, I get the same level of dynamic compression, but without the presence that I'd get with SSL compression. I hope my question makes sense, I don't really know the practical differences between the two. Are there certain times to use one type over another?

For my drums I always use superior drummer -- so I use the built in compressor on different channels.

I think it's at the point where the difference between analog and digital compression is simply placebo. If you have an Axe-FX II, It's the same for amps and mics and such. Whereas POD Farm and the like come close, the Axe FX II is completely the same. If you haven't heard of it, definitely take a look. They're brand new so hardly any videos though.

I always use 7-band for bass tracks. My synthesizers are almost never EQ'd, though I may build a custom distortion with Ohmicide. My film scores always have the 32-band EQ of KarmaFX

I generally do compressor first, EQ second, though it makes no real difference. Once it's in the mix you can't tell - only before, and only slightly.

I'm working on a cover right now and I'll finish recording it today. I always do one take as that's what a "cover" is but I was picking up radio signals in some of the recording so I had to overdub a bit. I'll show you that some of the track are EQ - Compression and some are Compression - EQ and some EQ - Compression - Different EQ (for touchups due to interference and such). Don't confuse with parts where I play at the neck pickup and it sounds different. You can't tell between compressed-EQ to EQ-compressed.

Will upload as soon as I finish it to this thread.

Hmm. I'll be interested to hear it so I can get a grasp on your mixing style.

well it seems I never finished it. Haha. Uploading the unfinished bit now. It's just a bass track over a regular song though that i've been talking about. I'm also going to upload a song from scratch, using POD Farm and Superior Drummer. No real amps or preamps involved.

A week of work just disappeared.. D:

Anyhow, here's the most recent render I have of it. Unfinished and about 80% mixed.

      Selkies.mp3

Also one from scratch using POD Farm 2 and Superior Drummer

Totally overlooked this portion. I stated earlier that it's almost impossible to tell impulses apart from analog compression now. Much like the Axe-FX does with not only effects but with amps and mics and cabs. One thing to check is if your Waves compressor is a completely new algorithm or if it is modeling another compressor. If it's modeling another compressor, is it modeling YOUR compressor?

      Needs a bump.

10 points to whoever names the chord. I'm rooting for Jared since he seems to know what he's talking about.. and we share the same name. Not coincidence, of course.

I'm wondering about key changes within a song. That is, changes of the key, not changes that are key.

In the same way that notes within a key sound good together, are there keys that sound good together? How many key changes can you have before it starts sounding off?

You can key change as many times as you want and it'll never sound off if you do it properly. Just don't change keys every measure.

I think it really helps to use a key that shares some notes. I guess it's hard not to, but for example if I want to swap from C major to B, I would roll into it by playing some Es and Bs for a bit so it doesn't sound like I changed keys because they share those two notes.

That's a radical example since they're two total opposite keys.

Dude, props on the song! I use superior drummer too... do you actually do the playing yourself for the drums and then quantize, or do you write the rhythms into the program? Also, the vocals are very well EQ'd, but you can't hear them very well. Did you record this yourself? And did you do the mixing yourself? The production quality is actually quite good.

I don't have an electric kit so I have to punch the notes in.

I'm not the vocalist. Haha. But the production was all done at home with a POD X3 and Cubase
