Tell Me About How To Deal With Heat

Okay, so I live in central New York where the average summer temperature is only 80 degrees or so (Fahrenheit, mind you) and I consider that sweltering. What I love about where I live is the winters and how much snow we get. I love the cold and anything over 70 I consider hot. My favorite weather is about 20 degrees and preferably not sunny, hopefully snowing. I know a lot of people who live down south where it is consistently in the 90s and often over 100 and I have no clue how they deal with it. Our house is normally in the 70s during the summer and if it gets over 80 outside it pushes 80 inside. We have the AC on a bit but not a lot and my family doesn't want it turned down at all

So basically what are some good tips to dealing with heat? Preferably not obvious things like swimming or taking cold showers or using a fan because they don't really help.

The best thing to do is chew on ice, whether cubed or crushed. It'll cool you off internally (versus externally like those other methods) and then even a hundred-degree day is tolerable.

One of the best things we enjoy here in Texas is Sno-Cones, though I often seem them called Shave-Ice in other states.

The A/C is on here night and day as the low only reaches about 75F around dawn, so much of the night is in the 90s and 80s.

The best thing you can probably do is go to a convenience store and get a styrofoam cup, like the big 44oz kind and just fill it with ice. I will sometimes get a soda at 7-11 and then reuse the cup for ice or ice water for a few days after. This method helps with taking in more water daily, but nothing will cool you off like spending the day eating ice.

I usually went nocturnal whenever I had to deal with a heatwave. But I consider everything under 110 to be tolerable.

I used to ride my bike to work all the time, and the summers here can get into the high 90's and sometimes over 100. On really hot days I finally decided to quit screwing around, and I just soaked my shirt down with cold water before leaving for work. It worked like a charm!

It was a shocker, pulling a cold wet shirt on before leaving, but I'd adjust in a minute or so, and then on the road I would hardly even notice the heat at all. By the time I got to work, the shirt would be bone dry and I'd be just starting to notice it's hot (but nowhere near the unbearable heat I would otherwise be feeling). Not sure that's feasible if it's just in the 80's - it would take half the day for the shirt to dry.

Maybe just have a spray bottle and mist down your shirt now and then. It can make a big difference. Plus there are those bandanna things you get wet and wrap around your neck - those work really well. Just a damp towel wrapped around your neck (it can have an icebag inside if it's not enough). This makes a huge difference because it's right at the top of your chest area, where so much heat builds up and needs to be vented.

I second that. Even cool water will help, since it's cooler than your body, it absorbs some of the heat.

If you don't mind getting a bit damp, a wet towel does wonders; it gives you non-sticky "sweat" that cools you off if you just rub it up and down your arms, legs, and forehead. Once it evaporates, it carries away some of the heat. But the cup of ice is one of the best solutions (and it's often surprising how long it takes ice cubes to melt when they aren't in water. Sometimes it'll last me an hour or two.)

I like my weather under freezing temperatures to a minimum of -20 degrees celcius. But up to 25 degrees celcius I'm ok and unless I'm swimming, 30 and up is hell for me.

Ironically I work in a environment with moisty air and with a heat ranging from 30 to 50 degrees! Freakin' desert temperatures... When I get to go outside for just a second it feels unbelievably good, it's insane. When I'm inside all I can do is ignore it or I can think about sitting in an ice cold bath which helps to mentally pull off 5 degrees.

Thanks for all the advice everyone. I'll have to try the ice cube one since that sounds the easiest and most reasonable, but today's only like 70 so it's not bad. Weather forecast says mid 80s to low 90s all throughout the week though so I guess I'll get my chance xP

If ice is not readily available, get a piece of mint sweet. Your water will instantly be cool when you drink it with the sweet in your mouth.

.. Or you could always follow the old adage - in order to deal effectively with the heat, remove yourself from the immediate vicinity of appliances producing it while they are being used to prepare meals. Not sure I quite got the wording right on that...

I start leeching air-con from shopping malls.

My country's malls have strong air-con so I find it really enjoyable to take a stroll in there.

Immerse yourself in the heat. The best way to beat it is to... get used to it. I live in southern Indiana (literally next to the Ohio River, I can see Kentucky from where I live) and work for the City Hall, mostly weed eating and mowing. I used to find heat intolerable, but this summer has been one of the hottest on record here (been in the 100s consistently and also at least 80% humidity for the last 2 or 3 weeks) and I've found it surprisingly easy to deal with, despite being in the heat all day long. The more I've been in it, the easier it's become. The jogging idea actually wasn't too bad. Do some exercise for a while out in the heat and really get sweating and then go inside. Goddamn you'll be appreciative of what you feel once inside, let me tell you, lol.
