      Ask me about Beatboxing

      Go ahead!

I've been beatboxing for 1.5 years, and am part of staff on humanbeatbox.com

I know a fair deal about it

should beatboxing stay solely within the hip-hop world, or does it have a place in the wider musical scene?

people like Killa Kella have done a great job in broadening the appeal of beatboxing, working with rock bands and classical musicians alike

but like MC'ing, DJ'ing, and graffiti before it - now runs the risk of being overused by non-hiphop artists (usually very badly) and casting a negative view over the whole thing

in, what's arguably the most insular and elitist of musical genres, is there any resistance to stepping outside the circle?

      *edit*
I'm a hip hop DJ, btw (just in case you were wondering)

      Thanks for replying

I think beatboxing, since it was developed within the hip-hop community, will always have a special place with hip hop.

I think no, it shouldn't stay solely within the hip-hop world, it has alot of other styles aswell, eg. Jazz beatboxers, Techno beatboxers.. It can fit a huge amount of genres, just give a beatboxer a pattern, he'll do it. I love it for that [/ramble]

Killa Kela has done alot of promoting, so has alot of beatboxers, not naming (because there are so many)

I don't think it'll be overused by non-hiphop artists, unless they think of it as a novelty act.

The more people think of it as an artform and music (which I firmly believe it is) then the sooner it'll stay strong and recognized

I like your optimism, but look what happened to scratching during the mid-late 90's

Never forgotten the image of Limp Bizkit's "DJ" (inverted commas) miming in the music videos on a 19" studio mixer

      Maybe I'm just bitter....

      LOL. Ynot.

I've heard that song thousands of times and, when you put up the pic of the "DJ", I thought to myself "...I don't remember any scratching in that song??" (I didn't know what you meant by 'miming,' at first)

When I clicked on the link, I realized why. LMFAO. That was just...ugh.

Rookybeats: I love beatboxing. I mess around with it every now and then, but I'm definitely no pro. Do you have any audio files of your skillz, online?

Heh, the inevitable question. As I said, I've got a year and a half experience, but the clips I recorded are all about a year old, making me a complete noob in the clips haha.

I'll get up to recording something soon, I hope I've improved (i'm incredibly modest)
