any guys out there use them? i'm getting effing tired of paying for razors and i want to go old school. i already have the whole process down but i was wondering if anyone had any knowledge on the blade itself. i've seen some for $5 and i've seen some for $150. any info would be great.

I don't use straight razors (a good one that won't break after a little while is like $300+... like for a good DOVO).

However, I do go the traditional wetshaving path. I use a Merkur HD (safety razor), which might help you stop bleeding money on ridiculously expensive razor cartridges for the latest 38-blade cheesegrater they're trying to promote these days.

A box of DE blades will cost you maybe $2, and it contains about 5 blades, each of which has two sides. Since I do at least 2 passes, I can use each side for 2-3 shaves... that means I spend very little on razor blades.

I also invested in a good brush, and old school shaving cream (as opposed to that pressurized crap people slap onto their faces like retards ). You can adjust so many parameters that you'll never go back to the old style again. Highly recommended!

Yeah, a truly good straight razor will set you back a good chunk of cash. And the cheap ones are crap steel that won't sharpen up. I'm pretty sure you could get a decent one for -$100 or so, but you'd need to do your research. I'd say Replicon's suggestion is a pretty good one.

      Just my nickel.

      No worries

Also, at the risk of looking like a spammer, have a look at http://badgerandblade.com/

Shaving-based online community. Some of these people are big-time into it! But there's tutorials and stuff, too.

Ever heard of an electric razor? So much easier than a blade. I personally use a safety razor and I don't see the problem in it ( mainly because I don't need to all that often ).

Goldney's Fact of the Week: In the Victorian times shaving with a blade was taught in schools because it was so easy to cut yourself with them you needed lessons in it.
