      Ask me about skiing

I'm from the north, so I know a ton about skiing. I ain't no super-awesome-professional-double-black-diamond skiier, but I have gone down stuff like single black diamonds and gladed areas and terrain parks without falling once.

      So go ahead, ask away!

      My question is:

Why is skiing so very inferior to snowboarding?

(I snowboard, and it's the funnest thing I ever do! I enjoy skiing also, but I like snowboarding more.)

I've never tried snowboarding, though I really love skiing. I guess I should try it some day.

Anyway, yeah, have you ever fallen, thus breaking every single bone in your body, suttsman?

How would you teach a beginner to go down their first slope?

Yeah, I have fallen, but I've never broke anything!

It was about the 2nd time I tried skiing, and I tried going down one of the Blue square at the place I was skiing. I started off good, but I guess I was going too fast and forgot to stay in control, so I slipped and fell about 30 feet down the hill before stopping. I was missing a ski (which I found soon after near the orange net-fence) but I was okay.

Also, this one time I very, very stupidly tried going on the tow rope without wearing gloves... ouch!! Got rope burn right across my palm.

Hmm... I'd teach them that you have to keep your skis pointed forward to go faster, and to slow down, turn the front ends of the skis slightly towards each other, but NEVER, NEVER cross them. If you cross your skis, you are going to fall.

Other then that, I'd say the obvious, like watch out for other skiers, don't go down anything you're not comfortable with, always stay in control, etc.

Skiing is fun I guess, but my burning question is at what point do you tell your Dad you're gay?

      Hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!

I wasn't expecting that at all and I just spit water onto my keyboard.

      That was good!

Hehe Suttsman, I've fallen too, even really insane crashes, but got up again without a single bruise

I remember once falling, then I took half a roll on my back, and got up on the skii again. There was a lift running above that one track, and these 5 people were looking down at me like "omg he must be super pro!!", while I was actually just really exhausted in my legs, after I'd been skiing for a week!
I think I've fallen/crashed about 10 times, where people have skiied over to me, and asked if I need help. People on skii-tracks are really nice, usually

But I have another question; what about of-pisting? Do you do it, and is it safe? Sometimes my brothers go of-pisting, but I really don't want to go, since I don't like to skii in steep snow, and I'm afraid of rocks/holes/thin ice.

going off piste is good fun, but not always so - I mean there is a reason to be on piste! And that is because its ideal conditions to ski/board on.

Some of the off-piste mountains are really dangerous too, but I guess that's why people do it...

No, I don't do off-pisting, mostly because it's unsafe, but also there aren't many places to do it. There are a couple, but they're super-difficult-double-diamond, so I'm going with everyone else on the hill and pass on it.

I'm going skiing tommorrow. Fortunately I'm about 20 minutes from the mountain, and my school gives kids free season passes if they do well in school. So basically I can go for free whenever I want. Living in VT is nice sometimes.

      Damn you are lucky

I'm annoyed because I had to forgo skiing in the Rockies this year to go on my school History trip to Belgium .

I really have to get around to snowboarding some time. Anyone tell me if it's easier to snowboard if you can ski already?

I fall all the time. My worst one was probably when I did a jump and didn't lean forward enough, and ended up sitting down on my skis. I was going too fast to stand up again, and was heading straight for a ski group who had paused. I managed to steer myself into the deep snow a the side of the piste, which hurt. I ended up without a ski and I did something to my thumb :S.

An off piste is fun, but make sure you can handle lots of deep snow. Practice on the sides of pistes where it doesn't matter if you fall.

A question: where is the snow best? Mainly between the Alps and the Rockies, but also New Zealand Mountains, or where ever else you've skiied

Green Circle: The easiest kind of slope, not too steep, not too twisty.

Blue Square: More difficult, has steeper slope, maybe obstacles, not for beginners.

Black Diamond: Most Difficult, very steep slope, more obstacles, again, not for beginners.

Double Black Diamond: Experts only. Could have a narrow trail, might go right into trees... whatever. Just don't go on it.

Orange Rectangle: Terrain Park. Has stuff like Jumps, Rails, etc. Coupled with a rating, like a Blue Square would be easy, Black Diamond is hard.

I remember getting on the black ones in the start, I was trying to go as slow as I could, since it was like, crazily steep. Eventually I got used to some of them, and they turned into great fun

What's the first ski "trick" people generally learn?
.... and is there any graceful way of climbing onto a ski lift?!

and don't say to not go on double blacks, that wont get you anywhere, i used to suck but then i found a friend that taught me to push myself now me and my friend when we go to a particular mountain with fast lifts and hard double blacks do about 3 to 5 a day.

don't be modest you have to push yourself to do good i have been pushing myself ever since, before i didn't wanna do the jumps in the terrain park but now after following my friend off one i am capable of doing the large jumps now
