      Tell me about mysticism.

Ok; I hear this word thrown around the forums alot; especially in ED and RS/Philosophy. The point is I'm never completely sure of the full meaning of it.

The dictionary definition is rather vague, defining it as something along the lines of belief in a transcendent level of reality.. but this can mean lots of things; surely it isn't so vague as that.

Anyway I know lots of people on here have some rather strong thoughts about this so I'd appreciate a clear answer as to what you usually mean by the word.. I hear alot of poetical lines of paradoxes in this particular field; which are all very well but don't bring me alot closer to quite fully understanding it.

I'm looking at Solskye here. Amongst others.

Is it a sytem of belief? Or a way of approaching things? or a scientific hypothesis? or is it "the undefinable" ; in which case we're in muddy waters.

Mysticism cuts across all systems of belief. Mystics are the people of any faith (or none) who seek to live in perfect union with the central mystery of their belief system. Typically that means monks, nuns, hermits, and sometimes philosophers or artists. One might even argue that extreme practices of the laity like Christian snake-handling have a mystical component.
If you have a sense of caring for others, you will manifest a kind of inner strength in spite of your own difficulties and problems. With this strength, your own problems will seem less significant and bothersome to you. By going beyond your own problems and taking care of others, you gain inner strength, self-confidence, courage, and a greater sense of calm.Dalai Lama

Every heard about Kabbalah? Its Jewish Mysticism. Some people criticise it and say it is a vestige of Paganism. Sorry thats all i know but it might be worth looking up if your interested in that sort of thing. Im not sure if its even remotely related to the type of Mystiscim you're refering to but don't let that stop you

      Tao summed it up nicely.

Mysticism, involves a higher understanding of reality and consciousness that most don't bother delving deep enough to see or understand. It deals a lot in Hermetic knowledge, or rather an ancient occult tradition encompassing alchemy, astrology, sacred geometry, and theosophy... Coupled with, emphasis on coupled... meditation.

Using this esoteric knowledge one can begin to understand and transcend the material plane and can begin to bend certain aspects of it by using this knowledge. One begins to become the subject.

As I always say, "The subject is the object of it's own subjection. The object is the subject of it's own objection."

It's what the people of the mystery schools, like; the free masons, and the illuminati seek and keep to themselves... illumination.

However, this information is out there for anyone to experience and obtain, but few bother to look that deep for it, or if they happen to stumble on it they pass it over as "immaterial", because they don't bother digging further with self-reflection of this knowledge. The mystery schools keep what they find a secret, hence why much is speculated of them but little is actually known unless you are actually a member.

Quick sidenote; I always loved the biased connotation of the word, "immaterial", as if material is all there is to life of importance... psshh...

With the introduction of the internet anyone can pretty much find out anything they want about anything if they put enough effort into it. Become your own illumined master of your own mystery school.

Did you know, the symbol of the Kabbalah uses sacred geometry and the flower of life?
