Tell me about... linguistics!

Any of you guys interested/knowledgeable in that field? Working a job in that area, taking courses or studying it? Whatever it is, do tell. I am considering studying linguistics or some related field such as applied linguistics and need some guidance.

I've seen a number of lectures at my university and found them to be quite interesting. Neurolinguistics, sociolinguistics, semantics, syntax, morphology, psycholinguistics, computational linguistics and so forth. I've actually seen quite a lot and found myself highly intrigued by these topics.

Do tell.

I find linguistics interesting; I'm not going to do it at university or anything, but I love learning how language works. Phonetics I find is particularly interesting, especially the IPA.

I dabbled in linguistics from a foundation in lit/writing and psychology. Here's my final paper for Psychology of Language:

The class itself was not uber-thrilling, but the main text, The Ascent of Babel by Gerry Altmann, was interesting if highly flawed, and I got to write this paper :D

I think existence calls for me to study linguistics. That is why this thread came into being. I'm not exactly sure which specific areas I want to delve into. The range of topics covered in linguistics is just kinda huge.

Language is one of my favourite things to discuss and learn about. But its one of these interests I don't share with many people and don't do enough of.

Right now, I am trying to teach a Chinese guy English. This is a difficult project. Its interesting to see what words he can pronounce, and which are difficult. I love the job, even though I'm out of my depth trying to do it.
