Red face Tell me about the death of disco.

So...why exactly did disco die out? Let's make this a fun discussion, involving all the music genres. =]

There is debate over when disco officially ended. Some say it carried on into the mid-80's, and others say it is still being recorded today. I was a kid during the "disco era", and my parents made sure I was very exposed to disco. To this day, I am a major disco fan. So take it from a major disco fan who was there... The real disco, the true official music that will live on in history with the label "disco", died in 1980. The last three huge disco hits were "Funky Town" by Lipps, Inc., "Upside Down" by Diana Ross, and "I Never Knew Love Like This Before" by Stephanie Mills. Once those songs were no longer on the charts, the true disco era was over.

Why did disco die out? Because it infiltrated pop culture to a point that society really got sick of it. It was even played in Burger King commercials. The people who got the sickest of disco were the rock fans who did not like disco. Disco was screwing up a lot of rock careers because rock was not selling as easily. That fed up state led to the disco riot that happened between games at a major league baseball event in 1979. From there, the disco era crumbled, and now it is dead, but at least we have the old recordings.

This is a short clip about the disco riot that erupted during Disco Demolition Night in July of 1979.

That helped really fuel that anti-disco backlash that killed disco once and for all (in terms of new recording contracts), but it did not stop Diana Ross and Chic from teaming up and recording the greatest song of the whole disco era, the big time hit that just about marked the end of disco.

How do you know you are not dreaming right now?
