If you're into this, do some reading on FACS (Facial Action Coding System). Malcolm Gladwell spends some time talking about it in his book Blink. Apparently there are groups of people who spend a great deal of time learning the intricacies of facial/body language. Pretty interesting stuff. |

Tell me about Body Language
I am a HUGE fan of "Lie to Me."
I've always been a "natural" when it comes to "reading people"... but the show revealed a science I never knew existed. So I'm now checking out books from the library to learn more.
One thing about the show that I found may not always be true is: Flaring Nostrils may not always indicate anger.
I was at a religious meeting tonight and I started getting upset. I HATE crying and especially in front of people. And I noticed I was flaring my nostrils. Was I angry, I wondered? Not at anyone there. Was I mad at myself? Yes... but, I was flaring in order to breathe through my nose.
What body language signals have y'all picked up on?

I will definitely be reading it tonight.
This topic is the first thing, other than religion, that has truly EVER inspired me.
When I was a kid I thought my ability to read people was magical in origin, lol, because I couldn't logically explain why I could pick up on the emotions of others so easily.
In my 20's I realized it completely for what it was, but still couldn't completely understand HOW I was doing it.
It wasn't until "Lie to Me" came out that I ever heard anything about things like "micro-expressions". Mystery solved.... begin education lol

The show is based off the work of Paul Eckman, if you didn't know. He wrote a book, Telling Lies (I'm not sure how good it is). I've been reading a book called "What every BODY is saying," which has some very good information about nonverbal communication from head to toe (literally). There's a ton of information on the subject (more than I have the knowledge or time to say) and it is indeed very, very interesting
