Well that doesn't happen every time you die, you have to be in "The Pit" arena/stage and it happens when you get hit with a uppercut:

(side note: The severed heads on the spikes are faces of the people who worked on the game)

Well not exactly, but he was one of the multi-colored ninjas* (along with sub-zero, scorpion, rain, ermac, and reptile)
*They're all exactly the same except for the color.
Anyways, Smoke is good friends with Sub-Zero and both are Lin Kuei assassins. However, they both fled the Lin Kuei when they found out that the clan was going to transform the best warriors into "cybernetic units" like Cyrax and Sektor. Smoke was captured and transformed then programmed to hunt down Subby. In Smoke's ending in MK3, he finds that with Sub-Zero's help, he still retained his soul. Then they are both friends again and they defeat Cyrax and Sektor.
In MK: Deception, Smoke is still a cybernetic unit, and he is discovered by Noob Saibot (Noob happens to be the "original Sub-Zero", the older brother of the one we all know) who reprograms him to be under his command. In Armageddon, Noob and Smoke launch an attack on the Lin Kuei temple but Smoke is defeated by Taven in battle.
Smoke's a pretty interesting character and he's had a bunch of different appearances.

Oh man, there's way too many to name just one. Here's some good ones I can remember though:

2. What happened to Johnny Cage? He's not the coolest character, but at least he wasn't a clone.
3. What is your favorite MK? Mine was part two...
4. Do you think we'll ever see a home version of NBA Jam with MK characters in it?
oh and a side note...MK vs. DC isn't all that bad...I played it a little bit once...it felt a lot like annihilation and all of that...the finishing moves are a different story though.
1. Well it's hard to stay totally consistent with the button combos, and there's a lot of different moves. Also, the transition from the arcades to consoles probably switched some buttons around.
2. Yeah, Johnny Cage is alright, but a lot of the fans hate him for some reason. They think he just doesn't fit in at all, which I can understand, but I think he's some good comic relief and I like him. He is one of the original 7 characters though, and I think they should definitely put him in MK9
3. I'd have to agree with you, I like MKII the best.
4. Ummm... I really don't know, but that would freakin' awesome!
Yeah, I'll still definitely pick up MK vs. DC, but I'm just dissapointed because I was looking forward to an all MK roster and a good storyline to tie up all of the loose ends of Armageddon.
