I am so thoroughly annoyed with all the good TV shows that have been canceled that I've actually considered writing some fan fiction.
But what are the legalities if I want to share what I write? If it's not for profit, does anyone ever complain?

In short, don't sell it, and you're probably fine. Check out www.fanfiction.net for a place to put it up. I have written Star Wars and Discworld fan-fiction before.
Yeah, you can write whatever you want and distribute it over the net or something as long as it isn't for profit.
If you're still unsure, you can also include a disclaimer stating that you aren't affiliated with the company.
Oh, awesome!! Thanks for the fast reply and the link!
Is the material you wrote under MoS?
Anything I may come to be brave enough to share will be under Zhaylin.
Thanks Vampyre! When I heard "Listener" was canceled, it was simply too much to bare lol.
I have some there too. All Yu-Gi-Oh, because I'm a nerd. :D
It's basically a rule (unwritten or not, I don't know) to put a disclaimer before each chapter of you story. Ex: I do not own Yu-Gi-Oh, Kazuki Takahashi is the owner, things like that. A lot of writers have fun with the disclaimer and find ways to make it their own. :)
I'm going to tell you now, if you were to write about anything that goes against the canon of the show you're writing about, prepare to get flamed. FanFiction.net is FILLED with Canon Nazis that will kill you if they get the chance. Characters of your own design, more commonly called own characters or OCs, are generally accepted for the most part, but if they're too perfect, well, you're on your own. There's more, but those nowadays seem to be the ones that kill an aspiring Fanfic writer.
I'm actually working on a story right now, Bleach Related.. got about 3 chapters done. Maybe I should see how worked up I can get those Canon Nazi's as you put it. Kill of Characters that are popular, and then make them completely out of character.. could have some fun if they are that serious about it.
But that'll be for another time. Right now, this story is one I'd like to be seen told, but know it never will, so I'm doing it myself.
Got any other tips for First-Time Writers...? Story Length, Amount of Dialogue, How to write fight-scenes, character deaths, ect..?
I think my stuff is under the name Joshua Stephens, Zhaylin.
And Snowy, Mary Sues and Gary Stus will get you flak anywhere. :D
Kastro, just remember WWWWHW: Who, What, When, Where, How, Why? Apply this to your story and characters, give it a beginning, a middle, an end and a conflict and resolution within that timeline, and as for the rest...go with your gut.
Well, I might have gone overboard a little. I've read fics where main characters are killed and the writer isn't hung. But there are some that will go after you.
Tips...tips....ah! Try to make sure that your chapters aren't so short that you don't have to scroll down the page. Descriptive fight scenes are the best fight scenes. Dialogue should be fine if you know the characters, but if you do a crossover of three shows or more, don't use every character in both shows. You'll never be able to split the dialogue evenly. Try not to put Author's notes in the middle of the chapter and don't make an Authors note a chapter by itself.
That's about all I can think of.
All I will say is I wrote Halo fan fiction for years... and Fanfiction.net SUCKS.
please do CB, because I love fanfiction.net
also, I wrote/am writing Bridge to Terabithia FanFic's.
fanfiction.net/~CreationX
:)
xD I love reading fan-fiction for non-canon pairings in various universes. It has to be that way when you're into boy-boy stuff. The best stuff I've seen so far was harryXdraco from Harry Potter. Digimon, Pokemon, Cardcaptor Sakura, Dragonball Z also have pretty nice stuff. Twilight is arguable stuff - too much fangirlism, hard to find the hidden pearls.
What the guys said here conveys it all: no profit, and a disclaimer that you're not affiliated with the authors will save you from all legal worries.
fanfiction.net totally metals, CB you blasphemer
Write some mass cross-over fiction, and hurry.
I used to play a DBZ fan-fic RPG. It was amazingly fun considering all the work that went into it. It is supposedly comming back, and I'll probably join again.
This was the old website containing the rules and races you could be and stuff. It was super fun. Some rules were strict, others were very loose. You could create your own techiniques and things.

Your fanfiction will be alright as long as you follow these couple guidelines:
1. If you're going to pair two characters together, make sure that A) the original show/movie/video game/book at least hinted at the possibility of such a pair (otherwise, at least make it convincing), and B) keep the characters...well, in-character.
2. If you're going to insert an original character, make sure it's A) not blatantly you that you're trying to insert - although it can be based off of you - and B) keep the Mary-Sue-ness factor low...meaning, don't give your OC god-like power; don't give them traits so "unique" (i.e., over-the-top) that they are totally one-of-a-kind; don't make them universally loved, etc.; and for Chrissake, don't give them the archetypal "I can't remember my past...probably because it was so HORRIBLE..." background.
3. For the love of God, do not kill off a well-loved character. As much as I detest Cloud from FF7, for example, I wouldn't go so far as to kill him off in a fanfic; because the countless fucknuts out there who worship him relentlessly will immediately stop reading. If you're gonna kill off a chara from the original canon, make sure he/she's pretty universally hated and/or unimportant.
Fanfiction.net sucked because it's plagued by a bunch of illiterate fanbois/fangirls who only care about their beloved characters as opposed to a real, well-written story.
Even when I used to write my Halo stories, I would create an entire line of my own characters and plot and only use the universe to set them in. This meaning that I would, if I could, write a story or two without using any Halo references at all.
The community was really good, too... I still talk to those guys.
I didn't write at Fanfiction.net.
Oh. Taken back then.
I know people who are obsessed with it. I might suggest LiveJournal for fanfic'ers.
You know, the two best fanfics I read so far had terrible English. I don't even think the writers had any real fluency in English at all. But one of them got me crying for a week or so.
Not trying to prove any point. Just saying that spelling really isn't important for me. What I really hate about fanfiction.net is the fangirlism. That is just plain annoying.
I've found some amazing Discworld fan-fics on Fanfiction.net, but there is a lot of crap.
I'm off to write a bit myself now, hough. Haven't written a fan-fic in over a year. I figure I'm due. I"ve half a mind to go write a fan-fic of some show I've never seen, or Twilight and kill off everyone in horrific gory seemingly accidental ways that are nothing but hilariously coincidental, ala Hot Fuzz. Then the big reveal is Bella's father is running a secret vampire-hunting society. Of course, this is assuming that the author hasn't already cogitated this idea...
LUL
Spare me a werewolf and I'll be happy.
The werewolves would be satirically incapable of sneezing, lest they immediately change shape.
But we're getting off-topic. My apologies.
Lol MoS, let me know when you write that.
If you can dig through all the fangirls and seas of illeracy, fanfiction.net is pretty good. At least, if it's anything like fictionpress.
