My dog went into heat about about a month ago. A male mounted her and she yelped like she was being raped. Would that mean she was "unreceptive"? He came back and mounted her a couple more times and her reaction was always the same.
About two weeks ago I noticed enlarged teats as if she's already nursing a brood.
But she's not getting any bigger. She doesn't appear to be pregnant (she still has her girly figure :D)
She doesn't want to eat most of the time (she eats about 1/2 of what she's offered unless it's table scraps which she gobbles down) but she drinks a lot more. She seems "depressed" and lays around a lot (but she still gets very excited when birds, bunnies or deer come near or when I go outside or the cat gets close). So, she's not lethargic.
If she is pregnant, when should she start to show?
Another question:
She and the cat grew up together. So she knows the difference between cats and, say, bunnies. She and the cat still play and are affectionate but the dog soon becomes too rowdy and the cat leaves lol.
When I tried to introduce one of the cats kittens to her, she "chattered" her teeth with seeming anticipation. My cats have done a similar thing when they were inside, watching birds and wanting to eat them lol. The dog doesn't growl or behave with apparent aggression but she does become incredibly excited.
Because of the chattering, I never brought the kitten close to her because I was afraid she would eat it.
Am I ascribing too much intelligence to her? Does she really not know the difference between a kitten and "common" prey? Or am I likely to be overly concerned about her intentions toward the kittens?
The dog is said to be part beagle, part pitbull, part who knows what. She's medium sized and loves hunting. She's killed and eaten birds in the past. She's tied up now-a-days, so she can't chase wildlife like she would like.
