Hi guys (I haven't been on here in awhile) I was planning on working on LDing again but i wanted to know if there is a way to LD without a Dream Journal. The whole DJ thing often is what stops me from being commited to LDing (pure laziness i know).

Possible, yes, but generally not recommended. Unless you have naturally fan-damn-tastic recall, keeping a journal is a good idea. After all, what good is a lucid if you can't remember it?
Perhaps you just need a more fun dream journal.
if I don't write my dreams down when I wake up I either have to think about them like crazy to memorize them or I will forget them normally
If you got natural recall, then the DJ isn't that needed at all, if not, it is a needed evil.

Yeah my first LD all I was able to do was shout out that it was a dream and to not do what he was about to do. He didnt listen and got his hand chewed off. My second LD was much the same but when i realized he wasnt going to listen I turned around and walked away. After a while I had the same dream over and over each time lucid and I started working on powers.
When I'm in Lucids I can remember everything that happened but as soon as I wake up my memory starts fading
I put a laptop in my room lastnight so i can go for a voice recorded approach. It worked great, I recorded two dreams. We will see how it goes I guess. I have a short attention span and crappy Dream Control (those two don't mix well).
Hmm voice recording should be good.

it doesnt have to be a hyper-detailed journal, although for many that is useful.
you just need a few quick notes to jog your memory.
i use my phone because:
-its always close by
-its its own light source
-i cant read my handwriting
-you can email it / back it up and expand on the computer if you like
A Dream Journal is a nifty memory trigger but is not essential to lucid dreams. In a lucid dream, as opposed to a vivid dream, you will recall everything as if in real life as the memory will be stored in your non-volatile long term memory. In generic dreams our prefrontal cortex is inactive and memory of the event is not stored in long term memory as; if they were all stored to memory, we would all be quite insane. Lucid dreams store the event in long term memory. Dream journals are recommended for the dreamers own analytical recall of the experience but certainly not required. Good luck to you! :shadewink:
I've had lucids that I wasn't aware that I'd had because I had terrible overall dream recall. Often it would take several hours after awakening to remember that I'd had a lucid and even then the recall was appaling.Quote:

Not true. I often completely lose lucid dreams, within a few moments of waking up - especially if they happened earlier in the night. I find myself left with only an image or two, right around the onset of lucidity. But the dream, itself, would fade away.Quote:

Lucid dreams do tend to stick longer and stick well, however it's still possible for it to be fuzzy and you just don't remember some parts after a while. Recall is a nice icing on the lucid cake :D. Good luck!

After typing in this thread, I went over to the "post your lucid special abilities" thread, and was reading through it. One of the posters said that he had become increasingly skilled at phasing through solid objects. Reading this caused me to remember that I was actually lucid last night!. When I woke up today, I had a feeling of having dreamt last night, but my recall has been pretty shoddy, for the past week or two. But when I read that post, I immediately remembered that I had spent some time lucid. I remember looking at my hands to stabilize the dream, and how my creases and topography of my palms were moving around, kind of like Rorschach's mask on Watchmen. I also remember sticking my hand into a wall, up to my elbow.
I suppose this is a case in point, and it leave me to wonder just how many lucids that I actually do lose, on a weekly/monthly basis. :shock:

Yea I agree with lefty97. I used a dream journal at first to get my recall up, but now I remember an avg of 4+ dreams a night without recording them. I simply go over the dreams over and over in my head during the first few hours of the day and it seems to be a decent substitute for actually writing them down. Thinking about starting one up again until I can get more consistent DILDs though, most of my lucids are WILDs/DEILDs.
I also write down a couple of words. I always enter the following in my DJ:
Where I've been, what I've done and any special features. Not in great detail though. I write down the keywords, the rest will come back after reading the keywords through. Reading them through and visualising it is also a nice exercise for your dream recall.
I have pretty good recall with or without a DJ. But using a DJ means I can go back annd see old dreams I forgot I had. I find this to be the most rewarding thing about documenting dreams because you amass such a collection. Its true that you might not actually completely forget what you have dreamt, but a DJ definitely helps remind you of all the little details.
If you are to lazy in the early am hours to right down a DJ entry or an LD you can stay awake for about 10minutes or so and memorize your dream in a closer to alpha brainwave state. This will help you remember when you wake up but you may lose some of the finer details.
