iPod/iPhone app that made me lucid last night!

So last night I used an app I found on iTunes called Dreams Controller (it used to be called Dreamsign but it changed recently). Basically what it does is play a bunch of "You are dreaming" audio messages while you sleep. Your subconscious picks up the messages and someway or another you become lucid. Well not only did I become lucid, but I had 3 ld's in that one night! I've only had two very hazy lucid dreams before that so this was a huge step up for me. I put the message settings up to max (40 messages through the night) so I would reccomend doing that.

I actually had a very bizarre dream that made me lucid. I dreamt that I was in my bed (kind of a FA I guess) and the people from Inception were surrounding me. They told me that if I went to sleep I would have a lucid dream. I "went to sleep", entering a dream within a dream and instantly became lucid. Pretty much the same thing happened annother two times. It was great!

Hmmm, I'm always a bit skeptical of these kind of things but I'll give it a shot.

Did you just play it while you were falling asleep or did you wake up in the middle of the night and then put it on?

It's a kind of thing where you set your sleeping hours and then it does these audio messages via notifications, so you can just put your iPod in sleep mode and it'll automatically happen during the night.

Make sure you set it to 40 though.

I'm a little skeptical too, just because I've bought "lucid dreaming" apps before and they always turn out to be complete crap. But also because this app only has 7 reviews and most of them are bad. They mention that the update was terrible and that the developer apparently took away a lot of the options and functionality of the app? I'm a little confused by all that. But hey, it's only 99 cents. Not much to lose. If anyone else has luck with it please share!

Hey johns, if the button off to the side says off. Does that mean it is on. I ask this because I wonder if it means, press the button to turn it off.

Bought it as well and will try it out properly later. The sound could be louder. When I preview the sound, it is loud, but when I get the actual message the volume is lowered. Strange. Hopefully it works. If it doesn't...no big deal, it was only $1.19.

If it says off, it is off. I tested it using times I would be awake (right now, until an hour into the future, so I would get many notifications) so flick it to "on". :)

During the night there may be external sounds bombarding the ears, as our hearing never completely goes to sleep, but our big brains often interpret the sounds and make them part of a dream in order to ensure continued sleep. Dream incorporation is a phenomenon whereby an actual sensation, such as environmental sounds, are incorporated into dreams. Ergo, an audio recording could theoretically stimulate the dreamer. My visceral sense, however, is that a voice would probably just wake me up. :shadewink:

This is true, I often dream about what is on the tv in my room. It is weird because I will dream about something then see it on the tv when I wake up.

I agree that most LD apps are useless. I've tried many of them and realize it's just a scam to make money off of info you can easily get on the internet. This app however doesn't feed you random facts you already know, it will atually help you LD. And about all the bad comments, the app really did have some problems but they've been fixed completely by the last couple updates. I would only go by the reviews of the newest updated version because the former problems have disappeared. All the options the developer took away have been put back in. Just like mcslurry said, the messages wil only come if the button is switched to "ON". When the button is off it means that no aspects of the app will work. BTW, you said you got the app, how did it work out for you?

Great! And yeah, you might have to play around with the volume a little. You'll want it loud enough so you subconciously hear it, but not so loud it'll wake you up. Good luck and let me know how it goes :)

That could be a problem, but if you keep the volume down to a certain level it should be fine.

I tried this last night but my ear buds fell out, going to have to try again tonight and post results tomorrow.

The clock on my iPod was all out of whack, so it didn't work because I am retarded. I will give it another go tonight and post my results.

a solution for the earphones coming out would be plugging some speakers in instead of headphones or even an ipod dock?
i have both in my room so i got no probs and I'm sure if you people have iphones/ipod touches you would have a dock or some speakers to use?

I guess that would depend on how good your english is. It might even stand out more if you're dreaming in a different language and then randomly hear english. I don't know, it would be different for everybody.

There's no reason to be scared! You don't even hear the message- your subconscious does. I personally wear headphones (although last night they fell out). If you do it without them the only thing that'll happen will be that the person next to you will experience LD's too. Happy dreaming:)

I tried it. It didn't help me become lucid but I had a surprisingly long dream. Maybe it's because I went to bed at about 8am after a late night that affected it. I'm going to reserve judgement until I give it a proper trial. The thing that irks me though is whenever I go to sleep I find it hard to go to sleep because I think a lot and that "This is just a dream" reminder creeps me out so I'll be sitting there thinking "oh God please go to sleep, or that thing will happen again" and then suddenly BZZZZZ "This is all a dream" and I'll be like ugh.

Kinda cute though. I also got a dream journal thing that you can add symbols to and search based on text, symbol, etc. :)

I recommend using earphones, and actually yes you do hear it - if you are awake. The only time you "don't hear it" is when you are actually asleep. The time between notifications varies depending on the times you set as "Sleeping from" and "Sleeping until". I sat up trying to go to sleep with the app turned on and I couldn't fall to sleep, and every 15 minutes it went BZZZZZ, and loudly I heard "This is just a dream". It freaks me out because the voice is a little mechanised and the person sounds...kind of hollow. But ignore that, it's a cute app and who knows it could work for you. I'm going to try it out again PROPERLY tonight.

I put my iPhone in a dock. It woke me up at around 6am. Then I lowered the volume, but it was still loud. Does it help using earphones instead of the iPhone speakers?

Didn't work for me. I never heard it go off once, and I had it set to 40, so I dunno if it's even working properly. Oh and there's no way in hell I would ever sleep with headphones in my ears. Will update again if it ever does actually work for me.

It probably didn't play because you set a high sleep duration time. It spaces out the notifications evenly over the hours...it'd be a little stupid if it didn't. I tested it by changing my sleep duration hours to 2 and I got a notification every 5-10 minutes. If you won't sleep with earphones or headphones in/on then I doubt the app will be of much use to you :P

I sleep on my side. There's no way I could sleep with earphones in. It's not a matter of "won't" but "can't". I hear text messages in my sleep just fine. Even when I have my phone on vibrate. I'm actually a relatively light sleeper compared to most people. I had the volume on my phone turned all the way up and had the phone sitting on the pillow next to mine. I tested it and thought it sounded plenty loud enough, so I was surprised that I didn't hear it at all during the night. I even double checked it at one point to make sure it was set to "on" and it was. Maybe I'll have better luck next time.

I tried the application again, I have yet to hear anything. Do you leave the app running or do you press the top power button so the screen is black? All it does is send me push notifications saying "You are dreaming".

The push notifications are tied with the audio track, so as long as you see the messages when you wake up you're doing it right :)

I'm hearing a lot of people saying that they haven't heard the message in their dreams. You're not really supposed to physically hear them (although some people do). The point of the messages is not that YOU hear them, but that your subconscious hears them and let's you know through the dream somehow. Like what happened to me, a DC will probably convince you that you are dreaming. Don't worry if you "can't hear" the messages, just play around with the volume for a couple nights and you should be able to LD. Good luck :)

Getting a little annoyed with the comments here.

You aren't hearing it because you:

~Have the sound on mute
~Have set LONG hours of sleep duration (the 40 notifications are spread over the night, obviously, it'd be stupid if they weren't)
~Have set what you think AREN'T long hours, but you haven't checked the "AM" and "PM" notch near the numbers. If you put 8:45 - 8:50, it mght be 8:45AM to 8:50PM or vice versa.
~Or simply have it set to OFF

I don't mean to be crabby but try thinking hard about what the problem might be before whinging about it.

Ah, I finally figured it out. Turns out it wasn't a software setting it was a hardware setting.

For All Of Those Who Can't Hear The Messages:

1.) Hit Settings
2.) Hit Sounds
3.) Turn Your Ringer and Alerts Volume up!

As a note to people, make sure you set the time, turn it on then CLOSE OUT OF THE PROGRAM. As long as you have the recent version of the iOS with multitasking, you should be fine. I set it up, but left the program running in the front (while in sleep mode, of course) and it didn't do anything. But then I tested it later with it running in the background and it worked fine.

Aquanina confirmed otherwise. Must have been a goof on my part, nut behind the iphone. :P

Aquanina, I have that problem too. I couldn't stand the iPod plugs at all, they killed my ears. I got new earbuds that sort of help. Try looking up Sennheiser CX 300 on like Amazon or something (that's where I got mine). I can successfully sleep on my side now. The only side problem is the little buggers don't like to stay in all night, but maybe they fit better to your ears.

I actually had this app before the update, I gave it a two star review. I was pissed that there weren't any settings, but I see the update has improved that situation. Will give it another try then and see if it can shake me lucid :)

All of the messages play in the last couple of hours of my sleep? I never get any messages throughout the night though, only the last couple of hours?

I can't adjust my alerts volume, only the volume of my ringtone :(
It's always to loud and I wake up because of that...

Weird outcome, a charecter told me that I was dreaming, and I said "Quit trying to get out of the situation!" And I got mad. Then, it turned into a nightmare.

I have iphone G3...no multitasking, which is why I left the program running. If I closed it, I assumed it wouldn't work. Now I'm confused. :hrm:

Yes. I guess thats when your best stages of REM are. I don't think this should be much a problem though because this is when most people have lucid dreams.

It should work even without multitasking because it uses push notifications.

But then your arms starts to bother you.
I recommend setting a smaller time frame, say 3-5 AM. That way you get more messages.

What I did last night was wear a light winter hat to go to sleep. It makes lying on your side more comfortable and also keeps the earbuds from falling out. I'm guessing this works because I got lucid last night :)

It's funny sometimes I think a lot of these things work just because we expect them to. I set the program on last night for me, and around midnight I naturally woke up and thought to myself in a sleepy haze, "what the heck, I don't want something talking to me in my sleep, especially not 40 times, that seems absurd," so I turned it off. Then I ended up having a few really long and amazing lucids anyways without it. :P

So I tried the updated App again last night. Have to concur I don't so much like that it's all concentrated at the end of the night. Will be following the advice of setting it in shorter periods, maybe 3 hour blocks.

And ya... No luck getting lucid, so far it just doesn't seem to help me. But to be fair, not much does! :panic:

To the people who said they think this worked did you hear the actual message or did you just become lucid seemingly out of nowhere... I ask this because some times right before my alarm clock wakes me up I hear as part of my dream like an alarm in a building.

Sounds like a possibly legit app :) I'll go ahead and purchase it, hopefully it'll work tonight!

Also, a tip for anyone who is having troubles with earbuds...I also sleep on my side. I basically can't fall asleep without music or background sound of any sort, so when I am on vacation and there is no radio or iHome, I am forced to wear earbuds. I absolutely hate the earbuds that came with my iPod and iPhone, so I never use those, they are too big for my ears! I personally prefer any in-ear earbuds, the ones with the rubber tips. I know that it bothers some people to have stuff in their ears, so maybe this solution isn't for you! But I know for me, I can comfortably sleep on my side all night long without the earbuds falling out! :) Sony has some nice ones, but they are a little pricey. Just search on Amazon or whatever for in-ear headphones.

I'll report back tomorrow and let you all know whether or not I had a lucid dream. Hopefully I will, it'll be my first! :D

@Aquanina (copy+paste is easier), I am sure that part of this could be a placebo, especially with all the logical reasons why it should work. However, I believe this technique can work, and in fact has for me on accident, given you get just the right timing. With this particular program, I heard it through the dream but instantly woke up because I forgot that I raised my iphone volume during the day (Was planning on 2 bars volume, accidentally had 5). However, more promising is I had an alarm that would only beep twice then turn off (crap alarm, I know). I remember once hearing that alarm go off in the middle of a dream and I was fully lucid. Thought process went like this, "Well my alarm just went off... So I could enjoy this lucid dream or wake up for class. Well crap." and I woke myself up. :P So I know it works, but the time needs to be right.

The app itself isn't really anything special. I could make something like this for the computer in under 10 minutes. However since it is portable, and only a dollar, I think it is a good bang for your buck if you can get it to work for you (And even if you don't, it still was only a dollar. Less than 15 minutes of work at minimum wage in any US state).

Yeah I know what you mean, both times I've become lucid with it I had a set alarm. It gets kind of hard to go back to sleep if the audio plays right as you're drifting off :P

It took me a couple days to get the audio right but once I did it really worked well. Play around with the volume a little and good luck :)

Well some people say that they hear the message, but for me I just become lucid in someway or another without physically hearing it. You might though, based off of what you described :)

I think you're right about part of this being a placebo. I think the thought of lucid dreaming before going to sleep is what makes your subconscious process the message that you get. But every technique has some sort of placebo in it (exept WILD maybe) :P

You need to update your firmware (software) to 4.1 or higher, it is possible to have an iPhone 3G and multitask.

Alrighty. Night number 3... volume was a bit better and I used my big over the ears headphones. From testing the sound it sounded like someone was saying "this is a dream" right into my ear. But still no lucid.
I'll keep at it though.

Well, semi succeed with this. Had the volume as low as it could go without muting. I was in a dream and heard it out loud in the dream. However, it was still loud enough to just barely wake me up. I sort of jumped back and forth between the back of my eyelids and a completely vivid dream image. Was sorta weird and thought I was gonna succeed, but then I completely woke up. Darn. I have confirmed that for me at least, the volume of the voice is too loud. I think I would have better luck without headphones, or quieter headphones, however as I have a roomie there is no way I am gonna have it play out loud in the middle of the night. :lol:

Anyone else have any luck? After reading through their intro again I realized they expect you to lay it by your head (without earphones), so maybe we have all been going about it wrong? Anyway, when I get the chance (unlikely any time soon) I will try again but without the headphones. I wish the rest of you luck!

I do think its an amazing app...I was in the middle of the dream and a DC said Your in a dream and I processed it as somebody asking me about LD-ing but its very good I would advise getting it

I got this app last night, and used it.

I'm decently experienced and comfortable going lucid.

My experience last night 2xlucid dreams (2-5mins short), It was more of a CAN-WILD type lucid. The actual voice woke me up, and startled me. I turned it down some and the next time i heard it, it woke me up as well. I didnt open my eyes, remained still and fell directly into a dream and was lucid. However, this was interrupted shortly after because the voice once again woke me up. I stayed still and went lucid again. I was woken up shortly after it started and couldnt fall back asleep before the notifications so i turned it off. I had it set to 40 voices, this was waaaaaaaaaay to much. I might just use this as a can-wild aid and try to have the voices more spread apart.

I actually had like 3 different lucid dreams in a night all in a row due to this app....

Allowing us to record our own audio for the night? I want to experiment with sound...

Unfortunately current sdk (software development kit provided by apple) does not allow user recordings to be attached in push notifications. otherwise I would do that. But if you send me recordings , I can add them to the next version.

Hey guys, this is awesome, but unfortunately the maker doesn't develop for windows mobile or android.. However, I do have a custom alarm that does exactly what this program does so i can try it myself basically.

Buttttt, and here is why I am posting. Most phones have an option to play sound through your bluetooth. So you could use your bluetooth, either all night, or just wake up early hours and insert it.. and just wear your wireless bluetooth for this.. most BT will adjust to fit either ear, and it wont fall off. atleast mine wont.. most decent ones hold well... worst case you can also wear a headband or soft fitting toboggan to hold it in place..

just an idea anyway

so whatever time it is set on (like where it says the time you sleep from, to when you wake up) you'd set that to when your REM starts? how often do the messages play?

ok I'm trying this tonight, before I go to bed I'm going to watch a subliminal lucid dream video, and fall asleep saying some mantras.
I will set it from whatever time I go to bed to when I wake up.

I made a custom MP3 with alerts telling me that Im dreaming that played throughout the night and it didn't work after a week's use. Leads me to believe only certain personality types will be susceptible to this method.

I tried this last night, I didn't start getting the messages until I woke up and couldn't get back to sleep xD

No, actually the new update gives you a couple more variations in the message that's played (a few more audio files) as well as sound effects that play during the dream so you can use it as a dream sign. It's not recordable, but the sound effects look like they will work. I didn't become lucid when I used it, but I did have a dream about a plane landing (the effect I chose).

It seems like this actually works!

Here is an option that would work very similar, In fact I do this with great results on my phone.

This is an android alarm app that allows you to set custom alarms and custom ring tones.
Alarmed Alarm Clock ~ Android Application v1.1.14 By Tom Martin | Lifestyle

Download it, set multiple alarms that auto snooze themselves throughout the night, use your own recorded audio files as the alarms, and make them custom to say "you are dreaming, do a reality check" or whatever you like from there.. the autosnooze option keeps you from having to turn the alarm off, as it does it automatically.

Not sure, but this app should have an autosnooze option, if it doesnt find an alarm app on the google marketplace that does and use it.

G-Alarm is the App i use for this and it works awesome, except I use windows mobile, not android.

The new update has a couple new settings including a "Are you dreaming?" option. So just hit settings and then "select dreams" and It'll all be there.

Since I'm using custom alarms instead of this app, what volume would you all recommend? Loud? Soft?

I think so. I set the alarms as loud as possible to be sure they wake me up. thats the important part for the method I use and I think this one.

Well to answer your question, I am still playing with it. The ones with my voice are quieter now than the robot voice was. The robot voice used to always wake me up, but I find my voice actually is a little more on the quiet side, so I have it louder. Basically, you have to play with it. A lot.

You said it Owl! Your voice is so damn soothing compared to the robot voice. I finally managed to get the right volume setting with the robot (7), but I slept right through it last night on the same setting with your voice. Oh well, like you said I'll have to pump it up a little bit. It DEFINITELY takes some tinkering to find the right balance between loud enough to hear, but not so loud it wakes you up.

Tried it this night, but I woke up maybe 5 times...
Settings: 15 messages in the last 2 hour of my sleep.
I didn't become lucid but I had really the feeling I was never so close... even I didnt did a reality check..

Dream started I was in the car with my little sitster and my dad he drive us to our mothers house so I stept out of the car. And was walking to my mothers house (Sister was not anymore in my dream... damn I didn't become lucid :p) then I wanna take my keys so I was going with my hands in my pocket and had a keychaing with about 20 keys so I was like WtFFF?! So I called my father that I had his keys.
Me " Hey I have your keys blabla)
Dad " Wow, u stole them? why you did that
Me " no i didnt i swear
Dad " ok I gonna pick them up
Me " Ok
So I hang-up then there came a buch of little kids maybe 15 kids (age 8) running near me.
Then a friend said hey Kevin let's go to the supermarket. I said no I need to wait for my father I have his keys..
Then the my dream scene skipped to that I was in the supermarket
Dream skipped to I was at a cafe
My father said blabla nice that you find my keys here you have 6 can's of beer :)
I'm 15 in real life he never would give this in real life, lol.
But the cans from heineken were weird I can't get them in my hands they were falling whole time..
I gave 3 cans to a guy who worked there at the cafe and he let the cans fall to whole time
So I was going to the bar bar (When you can buy alcohol etc..) And I put the cans on the table and they where whole time moving they were unstable you can't set them still.... they were magic or something, lol.
Then I saw my mother and she was like WTF how you get beer.
Dream ended?

2 Dream:
Blurry dream
Was in a game but the graphics were horrible (Like a iPhone/iPod FPS game) I was shooting blue/red zombies and I cannot move only aim at the zombies and shoot them I remember that I was at a map from Modern Warfare 2 "Skidrow map".

I tried it and I think it works nicely. But I couldn't go to sleep last night. No more daytime naps for me, I guess.

I actually couldn't go to sleep for a while, then I finally managed to. And right after I opened my eyes waking up, I heard the first message saying that I was dreaming. And I couldn't go back to sleep. Severely unlucky of me! As usual. But I will try again tonight. I'm excited. The earplugs weren't a big deal for me, by the way. After a while it's easy to forget they're on.

It seems I wake-up from it when a dream ends.... something like 6:00
I don't hear the voice in my dreams...
If I hear the sound I will become lucid ofcourse, but that's the problem I don't hear it..
If I do it louder I will wake-up.

Also I don't use headphones.. just use the speaker of my iPod Touch.

Not sure if you've been answered yet, this post is almost a month old, but I guess it works. As long as you're able to translate the sentance 'You are dreaming', your brain will be able to recognize the message, which is exactly what this technique is based on.

Bought this, played one dream thing just to see what it sounded like and my brother thought I was watching porn on my iPod. Either way, it seems like a good app but I'm afraid that my earbuds are gonna fall out.

No success for me. My in-ear headphones always fall out and just realize it when I wake up. I should buy headphones for sleeping.

This app just woke me up at 6 in the morning. I'm suprised, normally any sound on my iPod doesn't wake me up. I'll use it as an REM alarm!

Not necessarily a porno voice. Look up jackpot no hands, sort of like that, but less extreme. Cross that with my brother's tainted dirty mind. Either way, I think I was in a dream, and I heard the voice, and then got all excited and was like FUCK YEAH LUCID and got kicked out. That's my theory.

Tried this application last night i didn't become lucid but i must say that my dream recall and dream vividnesss have improved. I couldn't actually hear the push messages in my dream last night but when i woke up and checked my phone i could tell that they were still cycling through. So during my REM periods i saw things that should of raised a red flag for me like walking into a store and seeing what looked like hundereds of opened ps3's piled up on a top shelf, or sitting in a class room and watching a teacher write chicken scratch on a chalk board. Atleast i can recall weird things like this in my dream and thats a start in my opinion! Thanx. :-)

I have a pillow that has speakers inside of it. I'll try this out right now (its 2 am). The pillow is uncomfortable as hell, but its worth a shot.

ill definetly try it because with me outside noise always transfers into my dreams.

I guess i'm not doing it right. I woke up and was 100% sure no audio ever played. The only thing that happened was it gave me like 100 notifications. I have an old iPhone 3g. Maybe thats why.

There's an app like that for android . I'm also not hearing the sound in my dreams or it wakes me up.
