Totems were used in the movie Inception in order to figure out if you're in your own dream. Since you are not shared dreaming with other people, you don't need a totem. However, it can be used as a reminder to RC throughout the day.
I recommend going to the tutorial section, linked below, and looking up the different techniques used to attain lucidity. Also be sure to check out the acronym list and learn them, as they are used very frequently on the site.
For starters, you will also want to keep a dream journal so that you can improve your recall with practice.
I just found this site, so i kinda wonder how much as this site grown since that movie came out??? That movie doesn't deal MUCH at lucid dreaming at all.....
But on topic, i personally used to roll a set of dice, 3 snake eyes in a row meant i was dreaming (46656:1), as i am logical person, that worked for me.
I don't see how just a chess piece would work as a reality checker.... maybe if you always pull it out of your RIGHT pocket every hour.
Then one day you pulled it out of your left, TADA, DREAM!
That probably wouldn't work either. If it's always in your right pocket you aren't going to pull it out of your left pocket in a dream. You could, maybe, continuously check in your left pocket for the item. That would be no more effective than any other RC though, and likely less effective. If you're going to go through that kind of trouble you might as well use your "totem" as a reminder to do a real reality check like the nose pinch.
The bottom line is that if you expect something to happen it will. If you can come up with your own reality check that works for you, you should share it. "Totems," as portrayed in inception, are a fantastical plot device and allegedly tell you whether you're in your own dream or someone else's.
In all honesty guys it's really not about relying on a single reality check to induce lucid dreams, it's about raising your awareness. Always be asking yourself where you are what you're doing and why you're doing it. That's the key
