You don't even need RCs to become lucid, they are ultimately just a test to see if you're dreaming or not. Get into the mindset to lucid dream - you could be dreaming right now, but how do you really know for sure until you test? Notice how the keyboard feels as you type, and notice how gravity is acting on you, and how you won't be able to get up off the chair unless you put in some effort. It's the small things like this that allow one to become aware in a dream. :)
For that RC, it's really just seeing if you can breathe - I don't close my mouth while I do it, but some people do.

Become dedicated to your RC's, do them often and when you do be open to the idea you could be dreaming at any time, even when you are in 'reality' really assess your surroundings. You think you're awake, why is this? Question the world around you, does it make logical sense? Where have you come from? Are there gaps in your memory? Now you can do the classic RC's; looking at your hands is effective but sometimes your dreams will be vivid enough to replicate the look, use nose-pinch breathing in co-operation, the two of them together are usually enough, once you've assessed your surroundings. Attempting to bend the laws of physics isn't necessary really and you'll look like a fool if you do it in public. When RCing awareness of your surroundings is key.
RCs are really confirmation, you don't get lucid so much from randomly RCing mid dream (though if you make it habit enough in waking life you'll be more likely to) you need to get to the point of being aware enough of the difference between dreaming and reality to notice when you're dreaming, RC is confirmation.
