Dressing for lucid dreaming
Some thoughts on triggering lucidity from the waking body:
Two nights ago I became lucid because I realized I was deaf in my left ear. First reaction: "Damn, I've gone deaf." Moments later, realized I was dreaming. Entertained myself with the idea that my sleeping body must be laying on its side, and its ear was pressed against something to block out sound.
Upon reflecting, wondered if I can stick an earplug in just one ear before bed to trigger lucidity. Maybe in the dream I will notice the deafness, and I will be conditioned to check for lucidity. It's kind of like a constant reality check - "I am deaf in my left ear; last time that happened, I was dreaming; am I dreaming? Yes, I am dreaming." As long as I don't walk around my waking world with an earplug in my ear, then anytime I notice deafness I may be dreaming. I think of this as the poor man's NovaDreamer, in which my ears detect lucidity instead of eyes.
(I don't know if physical ears have anything to do with dream sounds, so this is all speculative until I try an earplug tonight).
But at least it opens up ideas about how to "dress" yourself for lucid dreaming. Maybe a heavy weight on the wrist, so small arm movements may trigger slight awareness. Maybe an electrical timer that turns a lamp on for a minute at 4am. Maybe a strong fragrance can trigger lucidity, if there is a way to trigger the release of a fragrance.
