Hey Laura, I recommend you read this All Day Awareness Tutorial. It tells you what to do.
Basically you just become aware of what is around you. How everything feels, what it looks like, how things sound, etc.
Mindfulness is a good word. Knowing why you're doing something, how you got to where you are, and being observative of what things look like, feel like, etc. :) Along with Yoshi's tutorial, mine delves into it a bit, too. It's in my signature if you want to read through it.
