The Timer Method and the obvious way to allways DILD!

Before I started to use this my personal best was 3 lucid dreams on 3 days, then I usually had a dryspell for 2 weeks. So well that was a bit tough.
But now I started to use the Lucidology 101 timer method and discovered the bullet proof way to reach SP, and the guaranteed way to have spontanious DILDs.

(This is from the Lucidology, and even if it isn't true it has worked for me)

The first thing you have to know is why this works. It's works because everytime you wake up and then get back to sleep, you actually sleep deeper than before, and therefore the trance is stronger and the dreams are more vivid. This is called Fractionation.

The technique I use to reach sleep paralysis is the timer method.

1. WBTB 5-6 hours.
2. Wake up and fall asleep with the timer started

The timer setup I use (Lucidology 4 minutes intervall):
"20 to rest then, 8, 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 20)

3. On every wake up you do like you would if it was a DEILD.
Lay still on awakening, eyes closed, if a feeling of giving up comes resist it! (I can't yet...) These feeling are: Itching, warmth, you want to turn over every uncomfortable feeling you can imagne...

I have actually not succeed in resisting theses signals yet so I have not reached full sleep paralysis, but when I give up and try to move my limbs are paralysed, but I can still move the rest of my body, but it feels like I am moving through gele.

Even though I did not succeed in reaching full sleep paralysis I know that I can if I can just resist the feelings, but instead I discovered a way to have spontanious DILDs all the time.

Here is how: These days while I was pracctising the Timer method, I thought that it was the timer that did my have the lucid dreams, but if I read my dream journal I can clearly see that it only helped me once! the 4 others were random DILDs and I couldn't figured out how I got them, until this morning.

I had just failed to resist the itching and turned off the alarm and went back to sleep because I wanted some dreams to write in my journal. But I never got any lucid dream... So I was dissapointed to say that I did not have my fourth in a row, and were stuck on my old score, so I just started wake up and fall asleep wake up and fall asleep.
So in a way I used fractionation without an alarm.

So the secret do spontanious DILD is simple:
Sleep more! And every time you wake up just go right back to sleep.

There is one downside with this method though.
When school starts I can't continue sleeping if I fail to respond to the feelings, because then I can't go back to sleep, I have to get up...

Anyhow I hope this thread has been helpful to you.
It's just a good thing to have in the back of your head if you fail after a WBTB, because you can just go back to sleep over and over and each time the chance of having a lucid dream becomes more likely.

Yeah, I tried this last night, timer and all, and I guess it was too quiet, as I only woke up twice before sleeping through the other alarms, and I also moved during one, which screwed me over. I did have many more dreams than normal (usually I have 4-5 dreams, last night I had 3 then 6 during the alarms, all a decent length).
And after the alarms were finished and I was just half falling asleep, I had a dream in which I noticed something was odd and then I felt all tingly, like S.P. I was kicked out of the dream, but still, this is something better than just dreaming in the morning.

I'm going to repeat the alarms tonight, make them louder, and hopefully I can turn a light hazy dream into one that is deeper, but I still notice the odd things.

Well done! This was a good first attempt, but in order for this to work you have to make sure that the alarms really wake you up.
But even if you do move or open your eyes, still continue with the alarm, because the fractionation will still make you go deeper into trance (the dream) and the next time you wake up you don't move because then you will be in sleep paralysis.

Tried this last night, I need to fine tune my alarms and when I go to sleep.

And this isn't spam Mutualdreamer- I've been here for 5 months already.

I had a lucid dream the first time I used this method. Choi I think you may have missed the real point of this method. You are supposed to automatically achieve lucidity in the first or second twenty minute interval. And mutualdreamer this isn't spam.

Of course I know that :D But I sometimes wake up just before I reach sleep paralysis, and alot of test signals make me give up and move, trying to overcome that.
But I have had some spontanious lucid dreams after the 20 minute interval too.

But i add that to the first post. (nah I couldn't...)

One thing to note, and I feel pretty dumb that I forgot to mention it... In order to not move when the alarm goes off, it's to use the intention to remember not to move, and to shut the alarm off I use autosnooze, so before you can start using it that are some problems you need to solve. Also make sure that you don't wake up someone else.

I'm a little confused by the timer set-up you posted.. what do you mean when you say 20 to rest? Also, what timer do you use for this? thanks guys

I used to just start the timer with 8 minutes of sleep, but if I for some reason couldnät get back to sleep the whole attempt was ruined by then. So then I stopped, but then I saw that he had change the first alarm to 20, then started with 8 so the timer starts with 20 minutes then an alarm, then 8 minutes and so on.

I use an app on my Iphone called 12, 24 Alarm because it has an autosnooze function so that I don't have to move at all on any alarm, but you can either use this alarm on a laptop: How To Trick Your Body Into Falling Asleep To Have Your First OBEs And Lucid Dreams In The Minimum Amount Of Time or you can make your own mp3 file with 20 minutes of silence, then an alarm, then 8 minutes of silence and etc.
Just write your name and your email adress on that site and you will be taken to some diferent timers. be aware of the adds spam he send you ..

Update: =)

When you are used to WBTB with the timer, use the timer as a WBTB without getting out of bed, because that makes SP much more likely!
And remember that you can use different timer setups.

There is no science behind Nicholas Newport's Lucidology 101, light sleep (that is, REM) is more conductive to lucid dreaming than deep, Non-REM sleep. Disrupting your sleep pattern actually results in lighter sleep, producing more REM (thus more dreams) and a higher state of consciousness and awareness, and therefore lucidity. I don't doubt that the techniques work, but the so called theory and science behind is actually marketing bullshit. Sorry, McWillis I know you're an avid supporter of Newport.

Someone informing on techniques is great, but willfully spreading misinformation to get money out of eager beginners? No.

Ok his techniques are not proven or anything, but the techniques from the Lucidology 102 is actually not so bad.
Although the Lucidology 101 is all you need just to get lucid dreams.
But even if everything is bullsh*t and even if he made this up in a day just to get money, this is still the best technique i have ever tried. I used this timer as an aid to help me get lucid dreams, but now the timer is the only thing I use.
Just try it, I used to change techniques as often as I changed socks, but now I only need the timer.

Yeah the lucidology series on youtube is excellent. It is one of the most informative Lucid Dreaming videos/sources I have encountered. It has the most in depth scientific information about sleep cycle, consciousness, brain chemistry and sleep paralysis that I have seen. I learned a lot from lucidology. You can also torrent the full series.

No. The information may be in-depth but certainly not scientific, his information on brain chemistry being particularly misleading. The rest of it is a mixture of easily researched scientific knowledge available to the majority of dreamers, and non-validated, non falsifiable speculation.

I would be interested if you have other sources that go more in depth with research on the sleep cycle and brain chemistry as it relates to lucid dreaming and/or OBEs.

Mmmmm ok - looks like this technique is for people who fall back asleep quickly. Unfortunately that's not me most of the time, unless I'm really tired. I'll still get myself a timer and mess with it though... lately I just sleep until I wake naturally and my recall is shot all to hell. Could also be because I've become ridiculously nocturnal. Man, I'm a real piece of work these days!! :lol:

Ok, I've thought about it, and actually I'll bet if I woke to a timer I could fall back asleep easily. Hell, when my alarm goes off all I want to do is go back to sleep!! And I don't think I've ever used an alarm except whe I had to wake up at a certain time, so I need to get myself a timer and see what happens. Thanks for suggesting this Choi!

don't you think if we have lucid dream this way it will probably end soon because your alarm will wake you up?
