Hey everyone. I know that awareness during deep sleep is possible. I recommend reading "Tibetan Yogas of Dream and Sleep" and/or possibly "One Taste" by Ken Wilber (although less dream focussed).
I haven't experienced this myself...yet. I am looking to see if anyone in the community has experienced this? If so - I'd love some additional conversations and information about the subject.

I just have one question. How do you know its deep sleep as apposed to REM?
There is an absolutely beautiful passage in Ken Wilber's "One Taste" where he describes the first time he kept awareness throughout a full day - and it lasted for 11 days before he lost it. He describes the process of flowing from dreaming (REM) into deep sleep and back again. He describes awareness during deep sleep as not really being awareness - because there is no more duality between observer and observed. It just is. But - not only do you experience this and recall it. He describes magically the process of dreaming (or REM) taking shape from this emptiness. It really is an awesome description.
I know I should post this next bit on another forum - but if you haven't seen this video - it is a must: http://integralnaked.org/news/index.aspx. In about 4 seconds - Ken (hooked up to an EEG) - goes into a meditative state where he zeros out all brain activity except for delta waves.

Haha that is some confusing stuff. For some reason it reminds me of doing WILDs....maybe i'm just crazy?
Anyways, i think i did this once, i remeber i stayed up for 24 hours...only i didn't... i was completly aware of where i was & what was going on...even when i was in REM
Ok i know i'v already confused u all, so let me give it a shot @ explaining...haha if i can even make the SLIGHTEST sense here...
Well i went through the whole day, it was last summer, it was a normal boring day, i woke up did chores, hung out, watched tv, went for a walk, talked on the phone, etc. nothing 2 special took place. That nite i had a friend come over, he was over all nite & i remember watching him play video games late @ nite i knew where i was & i was really tired then everything morphed & my body went into vibrations so i'm guessing i went into a WILD after it was over i was back to watching him play video games then i layed on the bean bag & went 2 sleep....only i still knew he was playing & could hear everything around me, i could feel everything too - as in my body on the bean bag, my body reaching sleep paralysis again...etc. During the whole time i just knew what was going on...I woke up around 6 am & took my friend home...i felt rested & was up for the rest of the day...
Is this strange 2 anyone else?
That sounds like an interesting experience - but I don't "think" it is the experience of deep sleep that I know is available to us. From what I have read - the experience of deep sleep is not even an awareness per se, because it is completely non-dual. That is to say - there is no observer/observed duality. There just is. All sense of small self dissolves. Big "I" and/or big "You" or consciousness itself is there. That is to say - your ego is not present. But - you are awakening to the structure of consciousness at a level where it remains available to you in dreaming and waking - such that you can remember deep sleep.
It's one of those things that I believe fully is available to all of us - because I very much trust the sources who have written on the subject. Either someone here will eventually float by to give me some more information or direction. Or - I will be here one day to give others direction. That's the plan anyway. And it's just a dream anyway.
sorry if im being stupid by aksing but how do you do deep sleep thingy and is it like buddhist enlightentment thing that that guy does with his brain I dont understand but i think what i do understand is that involves memory somwhere so just tell me how you do it if you already did explain then give steps how to do it. or how do you stop some brainwaves?
It's not s stupid question...but I am looking for answers as are you. I don't have answers. When I do - I will explain. And yes - I think it is highly related to the path to enlightenment.
A great read for this topic is "The Tibetan Yogas of Dream and Sleep" by Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche. In the book - this type of lucid dream (during deep sleep) is referred to as Clear Light Dreams - which are said to be non-dual. Non-dual means it is beyond the observer/observed duality that you are used to during your daily existence. The book had practices or yogas that you can actually follow. So - it is like a tutorial from this site. I am working on them. But - as all things - this takes time. So - I was looking for info and/or support from others. If at the same time I can inspire others to get involved in this type of lucidity - all the better.
It's all tied together.

Yes Coyote, I have experienced it and still do from time to time.
Coming september it wil be 21 years a go when i had my first lucid dream.
I did really much research for my self about sleep and dreaming. Also had my own EEG machine to test if i really could stay lucid in deep sleep. Btw deep sleep has two layers an upper level where u can dream in black and white and a deep delta level where no visuals or sounds are.
But Its late in the Netherlands, i go sleep but i write some about it later today!

Also - I think you listed yourself as a lucid beginner. I imagine that this has more to do with the mindset you want to keep - then how much you have to offer. Just curious.
