Question concerning DEILD Chaining and REM

Hi everyone!

I've read multiple places on this forum that it is possible to have multiple LDs in a row by using the DEILD technique to chain them together when one dream ends. The idea is that you stay still as you feel the dream fading, and then you transition into a new dream.

My question is this: What happens when your REM period ends? According to this graph, there are cycles of REM sleep in which dreams are supposed to occur: http://sleepzine.com/wp-content/uplo.../rem-graph.gif

When you chain DEILDs, are you extending your REM period, or can you only chain dreams until your REM period is over? Am I misunderstanding how this works?

Any thoughts, answers, or experiences you can share would be great.

Dreams occur both within REM and non REM sleep, but the ones I have in non REM sleep are usually short no matter how deeply stable they seem to be. I have no idea if REM periods can be extended by ourselves. I have quite a good success rate now for chaining lucid dreams and sometimes the last lucid dream can be the longest of the lot.

I think that you can chain your LDs with DEILDs only as long as you are in REM. I know, that you can dream also in nRem, but not sure, if it would work with DEILD.

My dream chaining usually occurs in the final REM stage of sleep. It's a 10 hour night of sleep for me though, and I wake up at 7am for about 15-20 minutes. The dream chaining usually occurs somewhere from 9-10am for me, but feels much longer when all added up.

So to answer your question, I don't think the REM cycle is actually extended per say, it's just that dream time can sometimes feel alot longer. Then again, sometimes it feels like it was only a few minutes total. I guess it depends on the person.

It is a common misconception that dreams only occur in REM. You can, quite literally, begin dreaming as soon as you enter deep Delta brainwave sleep. These non-REM dreams, whilst short, can also be vivid lucid dreams.

Interesting. I knew you could dream in non-REM phases, I just didn't think they were all that vivid or lucid.
