please help! no detail in my dreams, i only have/remember the basic plot line?

whenever i wake up to write down my dreams, i remember the plot line fairly well, but for as long as i can remember there have never been any actual details. For example, i remember that i talked to someone and they gave me a piece of bread or whatever and i know who it was but i have no memory of what their face looked like, what the bread was like or any external details like what the walls looked like. I know that i was in a school or forest or something like that, but not what it actually looks like. Also, i have never seen my body in dreams. Any tips on this? Am i just not having vivid dreams or is it that I'm not remembering everything. My dreams have been like this for as long as i can remember. Thanks!

These are all things you should be writing down in a Dream Journal. Try writing down your dreams everytime you have them and your dream recall will get better.
Just any detail no matter how big or how small, Write it down and keep at it.

What Myke said. Basically the more you think about your dreams over time, the more your recall will develop. When I started keeping a dream journal and trying to have lucid dreams, I could only remember tiny fragments without any structure or detail, but now -a few months down the line- and I'm remembering the whole dream in detail, even the nuances in my emotions.

After a while you'll discover themes as well. For me, I often have dreams about looking at my tattoo (though I have no idea why) and dreams with my family. This makes dreams much easier to remember because my brain automatically goes to these kinds of topics and makes thought paths.

As long as you are remembering something every night, you are making good progress. Some dreams are more memorable than others, so don't worry too much. Your dreams should become more vivid and easier to remember the more you journal.

sometimes I think I see people's faces or the details in houses or trees but when i go to recall them I tend to feel like I am making it up when i cant fully remember. :(

It just sounds like you just have some trouble recalling your dreams. When I first joined the site I didn't think I actually saw anything in my dreams. I works on my recall and now my dreams are as vivid as ever. You can find plenty of dream recall tutorials around the site (find one in the wiki) that should help you.
