If you are waking up 4.5 or 6 hours after sleep, you should either be entering or currently in REM sleep. (:

Rather then stages I like to think of brainwave activity. Falling asleep we go from Beta (awake) to Alpha (relaxed) the Theta (daydreamy) and off to Delta (deep sleep) . Waking up is the reversal of this.

Most likely in REM! Depends when you fall asleep, though. Early in the morning is perfect for WILDing, WBTB, etc.

I think everyone has a different approach... brain wave activity is always good to be conscious of, but overall I am always focusing on dreams, how they felt and what they meant. I like to be reflective upon them and maybe take more of a spiritual and motivational approach. Labeling certain states is good but it never really did anything for me so I refrain to even think about such concepts. This is just me, imho.

Found this thread and had a similar question:

If you drink water at night and naturally wake up to use the bathroom, will you awaken during REM? I'm asking because I've been trying to WBTB using an alarm, and I'm having trouble waking up and finding my REM stages.

Maybe I am not understanding the question. The REM state and being conscious are mutually exclusive. When you awaken you are not in REM. You are awake. You might have been in REM beforehand but you cannot be awake and in REM. The only place where REM and consciousness can coexist is in a lucid dream. Hope this helps.

Right, this makes sense. But when you go back to sleep can you go back into your REM period? Or do you only wake up after a REM period is over? (From my undersanding, REM can last up to 90 minutes)

from my understanding of wbtb's, the idea is that you wake up during your rem period, hence the 4.5 or 6hours, so you can go back to sleep and fall straight into rem withough having to go through all the other stages, so basicly falling into a dream/REM, cause dreams occur in rem sleep as we all know.
