DEILD problem Dx

So I've been trying to DEILD recently and I noticed a flaw in how I was doing it. I used autosuggestion to wake up after each dream but I could never reenter one, I would just fall asleep. Then I realized I wasn't waking up after each dream, I was waking up AFTER each REM cycle so I was trying to enter a dream during deep sleep. So after I realized that, I decided to again use autosuggestion except now when I woke up, I would set an autoshutoff alarm for like 38 minutes so it would wake me up in my next REM period. I thought this was fool proof, but last night (first time trying it) after I set the alarm, I COULDN'T GET BACK TO SLEEP!! So the alarm just went off and I was still awake :(. Does anyone know how to fix my problem? Anything will be greatly appreciated :).

Sorry, I'm not using any alarms to wake up so can't recommend you one, but have you tried searching the Lucid Aids forum for a phone app?

I have tried this PC app, but couldn't get used to it. Will PM you the link. I just try DEILDing when I wake up naturally. Happy dreams:)

But when you wake up naturally, don't you wake up at the end of your REM cycle??

We do wake up at the end of REM. But if you have cats, noisy neghbors, loud refridgerator... like I do, you wake at all different times and many times it's from a dream and you are able to DEILD. Plus, if you sleep long enough, ( I believe it's about 8 hrs or more), the whole cycle is mostly REM.

I see :(... I have a pretty quiet house... Is it possible to wake up naturally during REM?

What I did was practise walking up in the middle of night for a whole week with an auto shutoff alarm on my android phone and try to keep my eyes closed without falling back asleep. once I was good at that I started to practise re-entering dreams and it took about three days before I succesfully had a Deild. So all I can really say is keep it up and you will become good at it yourself, in this case practise and experience is the key.

But won't the alarm be useless if you wake up during deep sleep?

Not at all, because you should set it to wake you up every hour at least two or three times. If you happen to wake up during deep sleep you will likely fail at the attempt and just fall asleep straight away (not a problem). Also every now and then I manage to actually make up a dream scene and go straight into it. Basically it really is just a sped up version of Wild so its got like a 80% succes rate (thats for me). Just keep going, the amount of people I see give up lucid dreaming because of deild is crazy. Remember that if you fail you are one step closer to knowing how to prevent it happening again. Unfortunately I have iPhone (I just lost my droid haha) and my alarm only allows for up to 30 minute snoozes, is that too close together or would it be fine?

No its perfect, deilds are quite short and once you learn how to do them you only need to set the alarm for once and you can chain the rest of your lcid dreams.

Check out the Lucid Aids forum for people recommending Lucid dreaming apps or different alarms that are customizable for your purpose. :)

And if you wake up not from a dream, you can just go back to sleep and wait for the oportunity when you wake up from a dream.

The first alarm was set for 5 hours and the other three were 45 minutes after that. I didn't hear the first two cuz my phone fell off my bed and in between second and third alarm, I woke up naturally and put my phone back up but couldn't get back to sleep. Should I set the alarms an hour earlier so if I happen to wake up I can fall back asleep easier?

Experimentation is key. If you get the idea, give it a try.

I know I wake up at anywhere from 2 to five hours into my first sleep cycle. You might need that slightly earlier alarm.

Assuming your local climate isn't too uncomfortable at night you could also try opening a window while you sleep. You mentioned your house is quiet (unlike gab's) so perhaps on a Sunday night try leaving your window open. Monday morning activity often starts early and can easily give you something to wake up by.

I just read On the FILD thread that the later you attempt a DEILD, the more difficult it is to do and the LD's are shorter. I had that completely backwards.

I haven't had that problem. Just like melanie said experimentation is the key, It wouldn't be much of a problem anyways.

At the beginning of your sleep, your REM (part of sleep cycle when we do most of dreaming) is short, only 10 min or so. The longer you sleep, longer the REM gets, and with it your dreams are getting longer also. So your dreams are longest in the morning. That's why it's recommended you WILD or WBTB after at least 4.5 hours of sleep. :)
