Is this normal?
Ok So I am not sure, but I think I dream a little bit different than some (maybe most) people. So to lucid dream, one of the methods are doing reality checks. Now I think this might be impossible? When I dream, its like I am watching my dream play, like a movie. I have all the senses and everything, but according to the things I hear, when you dream, you have control all the time, like you can move your body consciously just you are unaware of the dream until you consciously do a reality check. However, I find when I wake up, I am not conscious at all, its like I said earlier, a movie that plays in my head that I am watching, and I am close to fully unaware that anything is a dream, even if the most strangest things happen (like my dream a couple nights ago, I had a dream that I morphed into one of my best friends for some reason, looked in the mirror and saw myself as my friend) But the whole time I did not even come close to thinking at all that it was a dream. I also feel like when I am dreaming normally that in the dream "story," I have my own dream thoughts, as if that the dream had a story before that I can only think of when I am dreaming. I know that this sounds very confusing, or maybe that I am really just describing normal dreams haha :P
If I need to explain myself more, go ahead and ask and I will try my best to explain better.
NOTE: I have had lucid dreams before (2 to be exact) one of them I did by DEILD, the other I noticed that I jumped really far so I suddenly felt like I do when I am awake, then I saw yoda in front of me and then I woke up. The other one did not last long either. Both lasted under 30 seconds. I now know that I have to either focus my attention around my surroundings and/or look at my hands and concentrate. So I know I can somewhat lucid dream, but is it a little more difficult for me somehow?
Also, I am getting a Remee Sleep mask, I am pretty pumped to try that out :D

I get exactly what you mean. It's just that when you want to make people practise lucid dreaming the motivation videos or books can't say that there's more to do than to just be aware and recall dreams when it comes to induce the "ideal" state of consciousness when it comes to lucid dreaming. But I am going to be honest with you.
In many descriptions that you read about when it comes to this practise, they say that you are just as aware as you are now, it's just that you are not aware of what is going on.
Well... that is partly true. Because sometimes you have those vivid dreams and then wake up and realize that you wasn't aware of what was going on, but sometimes you have those kind of dreams you are describing, movie-like sometimes no coherent plot just randomness and well it doesn't feel vivid.
However the solution is really simple, and that is to just continue your practise.
I know it's a boring answer although I did have movie like dreams and lucid dreams at first myself. But as I continued to practise my dream recall and awareness of my dreams, I started to notice a shift, at first it was like I was in another persons body and I was just experiencing his or her actions (still unaware though), but then it was more like I was in my own body but unaware of the situation like the motvation-videos are describing. And now I wake up almost every morning with "WTF was that a dream?!", to fully understand that feeling, imagined that you woke up RIGHT NOW and realized that all this was just a dream, or that you make yourself ready for school/work and when you arrive... you wake up!
Yeah it's a fun little paranoia. xD
But my point her is that you shouldn't worry, your vividness of your dreams will increase in time. :)

In regards to the whole "i should have become lucid then and there".
I had a dream in which i sat down with a friend and told him about lucid dreaming and how to do RC's and i didn't become lucid, so no matter how obvious it should have been at the time, it wont happen without awareness training of some sort. :P

Keep trying and you'll get there :) Maybe it's because you're still fairly new to lucid dreaming. I still remember even after 5 lucid dreams I found it quite a challenge to have one without ridiculous amounts of effort and even then that kind of effort kills my recall. Maybe when you're doing your reality checks, ask yourself "am I dreaming?" usually this gives your brain a bit more to do and is therefore more likely to have an impact on your dreams :)
