is there a specific type of meditation that makes it easier?
Vipassana IS a specific type of meditation. Google "Mindfulness in Plain English" and read it. Its a free online book that will teach you everything you need to know to start practicing mindfulness meditation.
In order for it to help you with lucid dreaming, you need to carry the mindfulness that you cultivate during your meditations with you when you get up. Mindfulness is essentially the same as All-Day-Awareness. If you read through the various All-Day-Awareness posts you'll see how similar the two are.
When you meditate, focus soley on the breath for a while to gain some degree of concentration, to calm the mind. After you've done that, you can begin to shift your attention to mindfulness. Focus on your breath, but as other experiences (feelings, thoughts, emotions, sounds, etc) arise, notice them, but dont engage in them.
But none of this will really help you if you dont continue being mindful once you get up and walk into the real world. You can master gaining mindfulness whilte sitting on a cushion, and never actually practice it in daily life if you dont make the effort to carry it with you. =]
Just continue to practice your mindfulness--both while siting, and while you're goign about your daily life. Mindfulness and awareness are nearly the same thing, and gaining consistent lucidity is all about awareness.

Lucid Dreaming and mindfulness go hand in hand. But unless you want to have LDs you won't have them. Most people meditate for years without any knowledge about LD, dreamyoga or sleepyoga. So meditation helps LDing if you use it to remind you to do RC and critical questions, to notice odd situations, to train prospective memory, and to cultivate attentional balance which is helpful in many LDing skills.
you can meditate in dreams too lol, creating a perfect self-reinforcing loop
