need advice on choosing a technique.

Hello everyone. I have been a member on this site for a while. I was pretty active in the 2010 and 2011 years. I gave up lucid dreaming for a while due to not having much time and losing interest Becuase I wasn't getting results. I now have time and a renewed interest in lucid dreaming. I can't decide on a technique to stick to. DILD never did well for me. I was never able to stick to doing RCs and keeping "awareness" throughout the day. MILD may be out of the question due to my visualization skills being horrid. I have attempted WILDs tons of times yet I always fail in some way. I need some advice and help choosing a technique.

Have you considered MILD but without focusing on visualizations, focus on mantras and expectations, and if you can't visualize it just tell yourself your expectations as a story or something?

I used to feel the same way about DILD as you did, the RC's and awareness seemed tedious. I also recently became active again in my interest in LD's and dreaming in general. I would suggest you try DILD and WBTB. This works wonderfully well for me, and I actually had my first LD in months last night.

combined with mantras.
Mantras I use have to do with awareness of my surroundings and skepticism. Also make sure they are in PRESENT tense. No "I will..."
For the WBTB, I will set an alarm in the night, around 2am and stay up until 3:20, or however your sleep schedule permits, but stay up for almost a full sleep cycle and get something done. I did laundry.
Then, relax and use a MILD-like technique with relaxation and mantras.
The mantras coupled with ADA and SAT techniques (found in links above) should be able to induce lucidity, given you've caught up on dream recall.

No matter technique you choose, awareness practice is still important, since it's awareness what makes us lucid in first place, it makes us do RC or just outright realize that it's a dream, so keep doing reality checks, and if you forget maybe you could use some kind of reminders around the home or on PC. ;)
As for MILD, you don't need to use visualization if you can't, just set intention while going to sleep using some other ways, like mantra or even just thinking about it. Also remember that 'fail' on WILD is not really a fail if you fall asleep unaware, with all mental prep and intention it increases chances for DILDs. :)
Best technique varies from person to person and can only be found by experimenting, so really choose one that you feel will work the best.

Techniques do not matter, rynkrt3; all that matters is your mindset.

LD's are initiated not by clever techniques but by the state of your expectations/intentions, your self-awareness, and your memory. With these fundamentals in place, technique is just a matter of convenience.

Conversely, you will have great difficulty ever having a LD if you only do techniques but don't have time for or interest in mental prep (i.e., doing things like RC's dream journaling, noticing the odd, working on memory and self-awareness, noting dream signs, etc).

So I would suggest that you focus on the fundamentals of lucid dreaming, get yourself consciously to a point where you can't help but have a LD. After that, the technique will become secondary.

Oh, and for what it's worth, my waking-life visualization skills are horrific as well, as are my concentration skills, but I've managed to work around those handicaps -- it may take a little more time and effort than the tutorials might imply to get to the LD's, but you can get there without all the "required" skills... as long as the fundamentals are in place!

Like Sageous said, its all about your mindset. Its all about persistence. It took me about 3 weeks of doing Reality CHecks to get my first DILD. But then one day I told myself, "Yo im having a lucid dream" then i went to take a nap and I did. Your mindset is all that really matters. Be persistent and never stop trying. I was like you one time but then I realized im just gonna chill and never give up. And it worked. Persistence and mindset. Have an All Day Awareness, that helps too, alot.

Besides what has been said, and providing you have good dream recall, i add one more thing : Build up your intention/ willpower muscle. I don´t want to sound like you don´t have enough intention :)

There are many ways to build it. The most known is to choose a technique. But if they don´t get you into that mindset, just try a useless a exercise, as Laberge describes in EWOLD. I like to count my footsteps, which also helps with awareness.
