Reality Checks
I try to do reality checks by asking myself regularly "is this a dream or is this real" Well last night I asked myself that in a dream, and I answered wrong! I said to myself, this is real. So I failed that test.:) I am wondering if I should just stick with looking at my hands instead. I have become lucid doing that.

They point is to RC in a way that makes you question reality or makes you more aware of the world, so the question might be done without actual questioning/awareness and so it didn't work. If hands works for that purpose, I don't see why you would change it.
But always remember, saying =/= understanding.

make sure you put a lot of thought into it when you say it. you want to mean it. also, doing another RC after might help, look at a book or watch, look at your hands if that works for you. something to assure yourself you are dreaming. hope this helps!

I think the site ate my post. Anyway, what I've always done is to hold my nose for a few seconds and try to breathe. If I can breathe even though I'm holding my nose closed... I'm obviously dreaming. :D

Just asking yourself isn't a reality check! In a dream you usually think it is real. So you have to combine it with something that fails in real life but works in a dream, or vice versa. For example, if you can float in the air you are dreaming. If you can read the same text twice without trouble you are probably in real life.
