Let's say that I decide on the task "improve my ability to fly" when I fall asleep tonight, and then stick to that goal until I have accomplished it, and remind myself while I'm falling asleep "alright I am going to dream in a moment, and when I do, I am going to practice flying".
Will this be a beneficial routine?

As LouaiB mentioned already, you are essentially performing a MILD and using auto-suggestion :) You would be surprised how well the mind will respond to auto-suggestion and visualization! Keep at it and I'm sure you will have success with enough practice.

There's a study that zoth linked in a thread that shows that visualization doesn't actually increase your Intention's power (how active the PM will be at it). It's as good as verbal intention. But, if your like me, it helps to get me more excited and focused!Quote:

It's amazing, what one can do if one is determined to accomplish something for "bragging rights" about it on the internet. At least I'm that simple. :wink:
But just rushing about and trying and do something, can distract one from fully enjoying the scenery and what the dream brings up for your on its own.
So there needs to be a balance, but I would have given up on my own, if it were not for the interactivity on here.
Being excited about tasks and goals can not only get you lucid more, it can make the length and quality of the LDs much better. Moving from goal to goal in the dream helps you stay engaged in the dream environment and keeps your attention away from your waking body. Additionally, it helps to avoid the "uhh, what should I do now?" problem.

One problem I have always had with lucid dreaming targets is that I can't seem to decide on a first target and stick to it.
Whenever I for example decide "right, I will fly in my next lucid dream", then I immediately start thinking "but hey! I wanna try dream sex as well! but first I might try speaking to my subconscious self! or just exploring the dreamworld! or...!", and then I just decide to be an observer and allow myself to be surprised by what might happen in the dream.
It's kind of silly really, because I could obviously start with one of them and then attempt several other things right after that in the same lucid dream;
nothing stops me from trying out several things in the same dream.
But the Task Of The Month thread seems very interesting, I will try that. :content:
It sounds to me your problem is that you get really excited about all the possibilities you need to do.
I suggest experimenting with different ways to stay on track. Just standing there for a few moments and reminding yourself that you'll do this this time and that next time. Or you could summon a dream character (or guide) and request that they aid you in not drifting off. Something is sure to help you!
For some reason, with me, having goals and preforming visualization of me accomplishing them actually makes it harder for me to remember my dreams. When I go to bed, I have to be focused on becoming lucid. This can make having and accomplishing goals tricky because I have to focus on them enough that I remember them but not so much that they overwhelm the primary goal; becoming lucid.
