^^ I'm sure others will be on shortly with more helpful words of encouragement, but you might start by remembering that "simple" and "easy" are two very dufferent things. Yes, the techniques behind WILD and DILD are generally simple, especially when being mentioned by successful LD'ers, but actually doing them is not necessarily easy and will probably require substantial time, practice, and effort to learn.
... So it might not be time yet to worry that you will "never become lucid," I think.
If you make it seem hard, your brain will make it hard to achieve. During the day, think about how much you want it and how nice it will be! :)
I'm right here with words of encouragement! Don't give up! It may take a little time and practice, but it is soooo worth it! Everyone has a specialty...in other words, some people may become lucid when they see things that just can't happen in real life (i.e., driving in your car underwater in the pacific ocean while doing your taxes). Some people may become lucid when they see something that shows up on a continuous basis (i.e., a rabbit is always in the dream), some people may just have to practice reality checks along with all day awareness (like me).
I will say one other thing Blackhole, you can never go wrong with starting with the basics. I have been lucid dreaming for a little while now, but everyday I make the effort to do my reality checks, practice all day awareness, and read something regarding lucid dreaming :reading: (i.e., Tutorials, manuals, and articles click here: http://www.dreamviews.com/wiki/). I study the tutorials like the Bible and I read the forums because I always find something interesting. I may not have lucid dreams as often as I want, but when I do have them...they are absolutely AWSOME :D!
Personally speaking, I believe the key to lucid dreaming is BELIEVING you WILL have a lucid dream and being ready when it happens (i.e., practice, practice, practice)! Don't ever feel bad about where you are at because our failures and not failures...just one more way we can improve! Never be afraid to ask questions because Dreamviews is here to assist you!
Good luck to you! :okbyenow:
Try spending a week without worrying about becoming lucid, just enjoy your weird dreams!
My first tip for any LD beginner is to maximize your dream recall.
This is extremely important, because if your dream recall is poor then you might actually forget the lucid dreams that you do have!
One very common way to practice your dream recall is to write down your dreams in as much detail as you can in the mornings.
Try doing this tomorrow morning - lie still and calmly think about the dreams that you still remember, then think about what you were doing in them, and eventually you will start remembering more and more.
The second step is all about trying to bring your awareness with you into the dreams.
One popular way to do this is to realize that you could be dreaming at any moment without realizing it - like right now, for example:
how can you tell that you are awake right now?
You assume that you are awake while you dream as well, so you might be dreaming right now without realizing it.
Try testing this - can you do something impossible right now?
Can you remember how you got to your current location?
Think about this for a while, and make it a habit to ask yourself things like this throughout the day - if you develop this attitude to your surroundings then you will eventually start asking yourself the same things in dreams as well, and if you have been honest and serious enough while asking yourself these questions in waking life then this will probably make you notice something odd in those dreams and let you realize that you are dreaming.
This is one of many ways to develop a more questioning nature.
My first lucid occurred something like three months after I started, based on your forum account you've only been at it a month! Be patient, it is not something that is easily achieved, but it is absolutely worth it once you get there.
Don't worry, WILD is not really the best method for beginners anyway. Your excitement works in two ways, first it helps to achieve an LD because it occupies your thoughts during the day, and you're actively thinking about it as well. On the other hand it can make you so impatient, and impatience leads to frustration very often.
Do you keep a dream journal? As has been said above, dream recall is quite essential if you want to remember your lucid dreams, and aside from that it can help you to find your personal dream signs that can make you lucid. In you original post you talk about people 'who just become lucid when they see something strange', but this isn't as straightforward as it sounds. You have to find out what makes your dreams strange in comparison to waking life in order to become lucid because of it.
Keeping a dream journal and improving your recall helps a lot. Often times people have lucid dreams and they don't even remember them. If you have a lucid dream and it turns into a normal dream, or if you have a lucid dream and fall back to sleep shortly after waking up, it is easy to forget you ever had a lucid dream.
and please remember that Sleep Paralysis is not something that is related to WILD or lucid dreaming. SP is something that happens to everyone, every night. You just don't notice it, because you are already asleep. It is not something you should fear. For me, feeling sleep atonia in my hands, arms and feet is a good sign that I am close to the "body asleep - mind awake" state. I actually have to fight getting too excited and happy at that state. In my WILD attemps this has been one of the last stages/moments before entering the dream, feeling the numbness taking over and feeling the weird swaying of my body left and right.
Even if you get into the actual condition called sleep paralysis, proper slow breathing will get you out of it. Remember you have nothing to fear. Even if you somehow end up in sleep paralysis, it will end all by itself. You won't be stuck in it.
