I usually use MILD and repeat mantras when I first go to bed. Is there a certain period of time I have to repeat a mantra to make it work? I'm trying to alter scenarios in non-lucid dreams and false awakenings. (Current mantra is "Next time I wake up, I will remember to feel my tail" and variations thereof, used to hopefully alter FAs)
Sometimes it takes just one repeat, sometimes hundred to become lucid ^^
The most important thing is to really feel the mantra, not just repeating the words but truly feel the intention and visualize a bit maybe. The idea behind it is important, not the sound of the words itself.
And in mantras never use future time like "I will" or "I am going to". Use present only just like it's happening right now. Your subconscious reacts better like that :-)
I read somewhere that putting emotion into the mantra is an effective technique. One suggestion is to smile when repeating, as it has a natural impact on your mood/feelings/emotions. Now that might not be as easy when falling to sleep as in a daytime or pre-bedtime mantra routine.
Ok, so what I've found so far is....well, pretty much nothing. No matter how much I feel a mantra, no matter how emotionally invested I am, it just doesn't happen in any dream. What I have found is that a command to remain still right after waking (for DEILDs) works after several days of consistent use. I then remember not to move (and get in the habit of not moving) and start a DEILD chain. However, this is only when I wake up; never during a dream.
In other words, I'm still in a pickle. HELP

I even shouted at the ocean to give me 9 Million dollars which triggered (several days later) a very memorable dream where I was on a mountain whith a yellow robed budda. I asked him if I could have 9 million dollars. He very gently and quietly but firmly said "no". I stood up "pist-off". There was a little basket of small hens eggs in it. I picked them up, one at a time, and threw them at Him.
The eggs splatted on his robe quite satisfactorily, then vanished. Then the Buddha began to quietly giggly, like he wasn't offended. Like I was his little beloved infant girl. But he wasn't going to lie to me. He respected me to much to lie to me.
Then I woke-up and cried because I treated him so bad. Then I realised that he knew I'd need to act out my anger at him when he truthfully said "no", and he had supplied the little basket of little hen's eggs so I could throw them at him.
Anyway
I hope we can have lots of ideas about mantra's

Dharani*
(Skt.*dhāraṇī; Tib.*གཟུངས་,zung;*Wyl.*gzungs) —
long*mantras, which are placed inside*sacred*statues*and stupas.*
dharani: Literally means*retention. Refers to high levels of*mindfulness*(smriti) and*insight*(prajna) derived from*spiritual practice.
Term also used to denote longermantras*where the meaning can more or less be understood from the*sounds.
The four categories or doors of*dharani*relate to the*retention*of*patience,*mantra, words, and meaning.*
Dharani; A*mystic*form*of praying,*mantra*or*spells*of*Tantric*order, often in*Sanskrit, usually transliterated and not translated. It is believed that*Dharani*is able to lay hold of the good so that it cannot be lost, and those of*evil*so that it cannot arise.

While I think the talk about how the mantra is phrased and worded and whatnot has merit, I think what's most important for the OP's particular scenario is to tailor the prospective memory trigger precisely.
If I read you right, it seems you had some success with creating a habit that triggers when you wake in real life, but not in false awakenings. What I would suggest is examine your past false awakenings and find a trigger or dream sign that is more specific than "When I wake up." The trigger needs to be something that you recognize to happen, not just happen. Surely, waking up (really or falsely) is the first thing that happens with respect to time but you might not recognize it, subjectively, for several moments. In that gap of time, you probably perceive other first things such as light, weight, sound, a reflex to move, etc. These physical/perceptual cues are accessed faster that the slower realization of "I am awake" which requires some cognitive effort. And furthermore, the things you routinely experience in that gap may differ between real and false awakenings.
So the standard MILD approach still applies, you just need to make it very narrow. Recall past false awakenings and really try to find the very first thing you experience, while allowing for the possibility that it may be different from a real awakening. For example, the first thing I tend to perceive in a false awakening is light. But in real awakenings, I wear a sleep mask and don't perceive light. Quite by accident, I found that wearing a sleep mask and noticing light was an effective way for me to catch false awakenings. In your case, the technique might use a mantra instead of a sleep mask, but that's my point. Look first at the underlying trigger, and then tailor your mantra and technique to narrowly target that.
Also, be willing to work with what you've got. You can improve a prospective trigger iteratively. For example, suppose the first thing you can recognize is turning your head to look at your alarm clock. It's too late to avoid moving by then. But perhaps, you can program the habit to, before you look at the clock, ask yourself in your mind "What time is it?" Once that is engrained, you can build on it. Now you can attach to the "what-time-is-it" trigger that you should tell yourself "Don't move." And so on, inserting prospective reminders immediately before or after key events.
