Not sure what you mean. you will want to wake up before you dream state begins and then begin a technique so that you can target your REM period. Trying to manipulate your REM cycles sounds like a bad idea. The only time I would recommend this is for advanced lucid dreaming where you sleep deprive yourself one night to have a longer REM period on the following night. Otherwise just sleep 4-6 and find that sweet spot so you can enter REM right away.
There are 2 ways of increasing REM occurrence and the length of time required to reach it :
- Sleep deprivation;
- REM interruption.
I wouldn't advise any of these, because they can affect negatively your sleep and the quality of your dreams as well (at least the first one).
If you're asking for purposes of WILD, then the best way you can address it is sleeping a few hours and then wake up and trying the method: the later on the night, the earlier and longer your REM stages will be.
