Anti-lucid mechanism?
Hello DreamViews community!
So I have been having a bit of problem with my lucid experiences. Often times I become pre-lucid ( Asking myself if I am in a dream ) but my brain, being the incredible idiot it is decides that it needs to trick me. Sometimes right before I look at my hands, pinch myself, try to stop breathing and such an event occurs the moment I decide and I lose focus.
For ex: I was eating chocolate but it tasted like bannanas, so I turned to my friend and realized that he didn't have any arms! I asked myself if this was a dream, and as I was in the process of doing a reality test he explained that he was in a car accident, and explained the whole story IN DETAIL! Or another time I met a celebrity but my brain plays it off by suddenly having paparazzi surronding them or things like that.
It seems my brain doesn't want me to become lucid. I know this probably sound ludicrous to alot of you, but it makes everything so real that I lose my connection between conciousnesses. This has happened 2-3 times now in the past week and I am becoming very close to attaining lucidity. If you have any experience in this PLEASE leave a reply, it would really help me out! :D

Visualize yourself overcoming these obstacles, going through with a reality check and becoming lucid. Repeat this a few times as needed. That way, when the time comes, you're better prepared and much more likely to succeed.

I think we are not supposed to lucid dream. The body and the brain have quite a few "firewalls" to prevent us from doing so, and you need either luck or quite some knowledge and determination to make it work and overcome these mechanisms.
I mean, look at WILD. You need to deliberately ignore or outright suppress reflexes/itches to trick your body into accepting your mind is already asleep... just like most ppl just accept weird stuff in their dreams as "ok" and never get lucid over it. You need to condition your brain not only into questioning reality, but also into overcoming whatever obstacle or reasoning it might throw into your way. So, dolphins suggestion is most likely the way to deal with it.
You should set yourself a very concrete goal that you want to achieve inside a lucid dream. Nothing too fancy or big for a start. Whenever I have a goal I have a much higher chance to get lucid.
My last goal was to check out DCs eyes in detail when I get lucid. That was on my mind for a few days, and when the next LD happened I could complete that goal. Maybe choosing a goal (and really wanting to achieve it) will do the trick. Don't select something too big, start out small, with an easy task that can be quickly done, even if you only have half a minute of lucidity.

Hey Jack :)
I feel like I went through exactly the same issue, I often still see it crop up in my dreams. I would question an aspect of the dream and then receive a long winded, detailed, (often creative) explanation for what I saw. (I also understand how incredibly frustrating it is waking up afterwards XD)
I tackled this issue by altering my RC's and focusing them on this problem specifically. I tailored my awareness so that any time I even mildly questioned reality I would remember to RC. I expanded this to include thinking of RCing, if I thought of it I HAD to do it. This was extremely difficult for me, It's so easy to brush off. This has resulted in countless additional lucids for me though, so it was worth it.
I kept this up for several years, it is second nature now. For you, I suggest some self-evaluation, figure out exactly what mechanism of distraction happens, and why you fall for it. Then, work with your own subconscious to give yourself the tool you need to overcome it.
Keep dreaming on bro :)

This happened to me for a time because whenever I did reality checks, I wouldn't really do them. They started becoming mundane and robotic . You have to really get into those reality checks and really ask yourself with a genuine interest, "Am I dreaming?". If you have that genuine interest to do so it will stop distractions and you will overcome this obstacle.
Also, a strong desire to Lucid Dream like, "I'm going to Lucid Dream no matter what!" will stop distractions and also make you more aware when doing reality checks in general.
