FILD and WILD Troubles

I am trying out the FILD technique, and I'm quickly learning that I'm having the same troubles that I had back when I used to try the WILD technique. Generally, I will WBTB after about 4.5 hours of sleep. I will then attempt to FILD after being awake for an amount of time (I have tried anywhere from 5 minutes to 2 hours in the past, but it doesn't seem to make a difference).

My problem is that if I hold my focus on something like counting breaths, then I will never get tired enough to fall asleep. But if I don't focus on anything, then I fall asleep before realizing that it's time to do FILD. I have tried meditation before holding my focus and making sure I'm completely relaxed, but if I hold my focus then I just don't fall asleep. Am I doing something wrong?

If you don't need to hold your focus with the FILD technique, then how do you know when to start moving your fingers? I've heard that you should do it just before falling asleep, but unless I'm focusing on something, then I fall asleep before I realize I'm even close to doing so. If I do focus, then I-- Argh, you get the idea.

I have had insomnia problems in the past, but I've largely found a way to overcome it. I don't know if this has something to do with that, or if it's something else entirely.

Any advice you have for me will be hugely appreciated. Thanks everyone!

Hi Iri, I think i can help here. You are a beginner trying a more 'advanced' technique in wild'ing. Although WILD / FILD are simple, they do require practise. If you hav the discipline to stick to 1 technique for 6 weeks then your LD count will rise. It seems you may benefit from the same system that I currently use which is as follows ...

There is a technique called SSILD (Google SSILD Cosmic.iron) It is a meditation routine done after a WBTB and the results / success rate are astonishing. SSILD is a hybris of a WILD / MILD and leads to lots of lucid dreams and false awakenings, although it is not a WILD technique, if you continue to do the SSILD cycles when REM is very close then you can easily have a WILD

So this is what I have been doing for the past 3 weeks (i am also a newbie) including my own results which are promising for a beginner

I go to bed at 11am. I naturally awake about 3- 4 hours later, get up for 10 mins then lay back down. IMPORTANT: I now quickly assess how tired I am as each night differs. A full SSILD practice takes about 7 - 10 mins so if im really groggy and tired then I will lay in an unfamiliar position (my back) and also put one arm in the air supported by my elbow. This is simply to keep me awake during the first 4 cycles of SSILD. If afetr WBTB Im feeling quite alert then i will practise SSILD in my normal sleeping position etc

Once the SSILD cycles are complete then I go straight to sleep and the magic happens AFTER sleep takes hold, you will understand all this when you read the tutorial.

NOW heres what I also do, seperate to above and regardless of if the SSILD gives me a DILD / FA etc I will then naturally wake up 2-3 hours afterwards. At this point in the early hours (I have now been asleep for a good 6-7+ hours) I know that REM is right here and that all the NREM has passed so I will again get up for 10 mins and follow the procedure above ONLY this time DUE to the amount of sleep ive had and DUE to the fact that REM is all around me I will do the SSILD cycles with a difference. During the 'seeing' step I get visulizations / dream snippets etc and will passively interact with them, during the 'listening' step i will try to actively manipulate the sounds I hear, basically I am turning THIS SSILD into a WILD. Most times I will continue the cycles with slightly more aggression to star aware until sleep takes hold and with luck I should WILD succesfully

I hope this helps. FILD is just a 'fad' a type of anchor for WILDING, Look up SSILD technique and hopefully this will help.

Isn't FILD supposed to be a DEILD technique more than a WILD technique ?

So if I am not wrong, FILD is supposed to work if :
-you wake up from a REM,
-still have some REM left under hand at this moment,
-feel groggy and it seams hard to move physical body
-will easily reenter the dream state in few seconds
-do a proper RC every 30 sec.

So basically you are not supposed to associate WBTB and FILD if you want it to work easily.

Yes this is true. In factif you wake up without moving then just about anything will get you back into the dream. As the OP seems to be using this technique after being awake im unsure that it could ever work as he / she is moving their fingers whilst trying to fall asleep. It is dur to their lack of understanding of this technique that i figured they are a newbie and thats why i recommended SSILD as thats a great technique for a beginner and you dont have to wake up and keep dead still either

Hey guys, thanks for the advice. I'm not actually a total newbie, but I'm coming back to lucid dreaming after a few years. So FILD is pretty new to me. I didn't realize that it was only to be used as a DEILD technique, I'll keep that in mind from now on. Thanks kaan.

And Ezzo, I've heard of SSILD before, but never looked it up. It sounds pretty interesting, and I will definitely look up the technique. Thanks again for the advice!
