Technique: worked one day. From awake to Reality check

This was a very interesting technique i did the other day. i haven't lucid in a long time but recently i'm remembering my dreams more and i decided to try something new. While closed eyes i kept imagining doing the hand/finger checking reality check. And i just kept doing it. Then my mind slipped into dreaming state and I continued the check i was doing but now in my dream. Saw i had 6 fingers and that led me to lucidity.

is this a common technique? Does it have probability to work again? :)
