Effective Lucid Dreaming Techniques According to Peer Reviewed Study

Dr. Denholm Aspy out of Australia had a study recently published investigating the effectiveness of RCs, WBTB and MILD on lucid dreaming. The study was covered in a good number of different news outlets in the last week, including the magazine Newsweek.

From the abstract:

Results showed that the combination of reality testing, WBTB and the MILD technique was effective at inducing lucid dreams. Several factors that influenced the effectiveness of the MILD technique were identified, including general dream recall and the amount of time taken to fall asleep after finishing the technique.

Those of us who use the MILD along with WBTB can attest to the effectiveness, but it is great to see scientific research to back it up.

I see he also has several other studies including one on the SSILD technique (my favorite) which showed it to be effective but the study is still under peer review according to his website. Other studies cover dream recall as well as the effect of "B" vitamins on sleep and dreams.

You can do a 'news.google' search for 'denholm aspy lucid' which finds some of the articles that the study inspired or a regular google search of websites to find more info about him including his website outlining his research. I don't have any connection to him but I am happy to see actual peer reviewed research on lucid dreaming techniques.

If anyone finds a free, legal copy of the full study, please post where you found it. I'd love to read it in it's entirety.

Thanks for sharing, fogelbise! Quite inspiring to read that more research has been conducted on our favorite topic and that findings are published in diverse media sources, thus spreading awareness of lucid dreaming.

Interesting studies, especially on SSILD, I'd love to read them and will be browsing the web for more.

I wish scientists like Dr. Aspy would one day also make such research available to the lucid community, from which, no doubt they have also learned a lot.

I for one am sort of glad that the study focused on MILD, RC's, and WBTB, because these techniques really form the heart of successful LD'ing -- especially MILD, whose components are instrumental toward developing a lucid mindset; to me that indicates a certain sincerity. WILD techniques like SSILD are certainly cool (and effective), but they almost necessarily are things dreamers do after they've developed that mindset... better I think to base studies like this on the foundational, rather than peripheral, stuff.

Definitely inspiring and definitely my favorite topic as well! I've heard that many researchers are eager to share their findings freely but the publishers of the research put certain restrictions on that. I was told that if you contact the author of studies directly they can often provide a free copy for educational, non-commercial purposes.

That definitely makes sense and I have always valued your opinion and guidance Sageous. I was excited and heartened to see multiple recent studies related to dreaming and lucid dreaming from an author that could go on to produce many more. His picture on his website appears as if he is still quite young and hopefully he stays interested in studying dreaming.

I subscribe to news updates from google with the search term lucid dreaming and articles keep pouring in over the last week, most of them related to this newly published study. I haven't seen this many articles since the Voss 40HZ study (a study that was critiqued and controversial around DV).
