      MILD advices from skipper

      So I got some excellent advice from skipper regarding MILD techniques. I couldn't find the extra info that I sought after from many a old posts on MILD but they were answered very clearly by him. I'd be doing those who might be trying MILD a disservice if i didn't share this so here's what he said:

      Lds became more sparse after that though, and I didn't get many until each time I felt like giving up last week.

      Oh yeah I've been changing my mild mantra a little each time after the dry spell, trying to find the one that felt least resistance, but the theme was the same. I think i managed to find the mantra last night that got me really excited each time I said it.

      I'm doing my mild most seriously when I reach the state without distracted thoughts during meditation. And try to repeat it periodically throughout the day.

      But am I doing it right? Should I keep the mantra exactly the same now? And how long would you practice the mild each day? Oh yeah should I be doing the shadow work daily as I do the mild? Shuld the practice be moved right before bed?

      I'm getting really close to constant consistent Ld I think, but I'd really love to have your awesome guidance piece the missing puzzle and get there

      Oh yeah I also tried asking the dream while lucid to "make me lucid in every dream" maybe I gotta try again.

      Basically, it's really simple, you did it before, and you know what it's like, now all you have to do is under-complicate it/be simpler.

      The reason you keep the mantra the exact same is well, so that you can focus on it. Focus is very important with lucid dreaming and any mental/metaphysical experience. Wherever your focus is, that is where all your power goes. It doesn't come from anything outside of yourself, it starts all within yourself, most importantly.

      It works just like an experience bar in a video game. The more you use it, the more it expands, and you never loose experience. This is why it's possible to "turn on/off" omnilucidity. Stay consistent with the mantra, change it/use more if you want something different. The most important thing, again, is feeling. Like, emotionally. Feel it, truly feel it, like you're 100% there.

      The time as for how long? I say it really doesn't matter. If your focus is very potent, just a minute of straight awareness and feeling into it, will be very powerful.

      Do shadow work daily, constantly. Constantly, constantly, constantly. It's like medicine. Our minds/egos love to try and doubt everything, and block our paths out of protection, but this is unnecessary. The more you open your heart to believing in all this stuff, the more and more it happens. When you do shadow work, don't treat it like a chore, treat it like you really, really want to change your line of thinking that you feel is blocking what you really want to do.

      The practice can be moved to any point of the day. The principal is the same, but before bed is the most important. You don't want unwanted thoughts clouding your lucid dreaming, so before you go to bed, be sure to meditate at least until you "run out of thoughts" or you are in a spot of awareness, then you just feel your mantra, like it's natural and it's already happening, and boom.

      People really over complicate lucid dreaming. They figure since it's so powerful, it must be super hard. I mean, we're all taught nothing comes easy in life huh? but even that is straight up, well, a lie.
      It's something everyone can do, just like being a baby and learning how to walk. That's exactly how it should be viewed, instead of the rocket sciencey, super hard, philosophical deep thinker "woke" type of approach. A lot of the hassle, comes from us, and it's really simple to undo the trickery and self doubt that we impose on ourselves with things like this.

      Remember, the most important step with all of this is the shadow work. I've experienced it multiple, multiple, multiple times. When I didn't believe, nothing happened, when i did believe, things happen.
      The point is, lucid dreaming isn't hard at all, it's overcoming our doubts and fears which is hard. This is why a lot of people quit early, because they look to this for an escape, but most of them aren't naturals, and it will require you to handle the problems that you're trying to run away from. (Self doubt, and fears).

      It's a nice experience, lovely one, and it goes plenty deeper than just becoming aware in dreaming.

      Glad it helped, good luck.
      I had major successes with his method initially and now it's even better!

      I hope it helps anyone who might be having trouble with MILD.

      Thanks again skipper, you're awesome!

      Ok, so basically when you do a mantra or something, and you feel some emotional resistance regarding your intention, the act of dealing with those emotions is shadow work.

      You could probably find some quick guides that probably explains it better and gives a pretty good steps than me but I'll do what I can.

      Doing my mantra
      -> doubts arise
      -> recognizing the doubt
      -> I ask myself why I feel this
      -> I address the doubt
      -> Do mantra again
      -> Deal with any other doubts that arise

      Something like that. So for example:

      -> I do mantra like "I'm lucid in every dream now"
      -> I feel a bit uncomfortable
      -> I try to put it into words - "I don't think I can do it"
      -> I reassure it "Sure you can, look at how much you've improved in the past month!" and some other reassuring example until the feeling is at peace
      -> See if there are any other doubts or feeling
      -> If not, repeat mantra, really feel the mantra 100% as if I'm there

      Something like that. But I think there's multiple ways to go about it. For instance you can really feel the emotions, to the core and discover the root of what's causing it. You could... Let out the frustrating emotions somehow. Or you could maybe override it with a even stronger emotion.

      Like when I was about give up on LD, it felt so bad, I felt like I failed so hard, that nothing I'd do would make any differences. It was so bad it was one of the worst feelings I ever felt in my life. Why am I even doing this? It's hard because unlike many other stuff in life, its hard to even tell if you're doing it right. But I looked up some inspirational quotes about how success is right around the corner when you are about give up. I got mad, I was so fed up. I told myself I'm gonna do it no matter what. that NO EMOTION IS THE BOSS OF ME, I'M THE BOSS OF IT! I think that emotion of DETERMINATION, overwrote the previous doubt. I tried my hardest that day, had LDs that night.

      Hope that explains it somewhat

      This is a great thread...thanks. I am working on my MILD as well right now.

      I absolutely agree about "shadow work". I see that as working constantly to create new neural pathways. There's a lot of good science behind our ability to do that. You need to really set your intention hard and the more we do that the easier it gets. It's like riding a bike, right? Once we learn how and do it a lot that circuit is pretty much set in our brain.

      When we feel that emotional resistance it is our brain trying to keep us on that well-worn path of least resistance. Persistence definitely furthers.

      I spent a lot of time yesterday in heartfelt visualization and mantra practice and I slipped into lucidity better than ever last night.
      The more I gaze....the more I crave to see

      When you next stand at cliff's edge....will you finally learn to fly?

      Glad you enjoyed it

      And yessir! It's definitely like riding a bike, easier each time.

      Like Robert Frost's "Road not taken", we persist through the tall grass of resistance, and made all the difference!

      A very helpful post, I just realize that I've never done this shadow work, every time I do the MILD I only focus on my mantra trying to suppress my negative thoughts and doubts , and maybe this is why it never worked, I have to deal with this negative thoughts and replace with positive and encouraging ones isn't it?
      And I have a question for you guys, how many times per day do you exercise your MILD? because now I'm doing it only at night when I meditate before bed, should I do it more times during the day?

      Hey nia02....

      The work that you do during the day is extremely important. In my own experience I found that once I began serious daytime training I began to achieve regular success at night. Remember that you are retraining your brain....establishing those new pathways. The things that you tell yourself sincerely all day will absolutely begin to happen for you at night as you wear in new neural paths for your mind to naturally go down.

      One of the more general ones that was very effective for me early on is....."I will sleep, I will dream and I will remember those dreams". Once I started repeating that a few hundred times during the day I found myself in a wonderful cycle of good sleep, followed by vibrant and clear dreams. Throw in "I will become lucid" and all bets are off.

      Daytime practice is even more than just practicing your mantras, though......you really need to start looking at this whole thing from the classic Buddhist perspective. Remember that the way you perceive your "reality" during the day is the way you will perceive it in your dreams. You need to change that to start becoming lucid and it takes a bit of work and diligent practice. Ask yourself over and over during the day, "Is this a dream?". Ask sincerely. In fact, tell yourself sincerely that "This is a dream". Say that over and over all day...then again as you are falling asleep, and at some point you will say it in a dream. When that happened for me I knew I was in the game.

      Yes the shadow work is real important. You are right you have to deal with the feeling, can't just suppress them, because it comes back later. But it's good if you feel the negative feelings, because then you know you can identify the feelings.

      You should do mild and shadow work until YOU, yourself believe is going to work.

      You wrote "doing it ONLY at night"
      Saying "only" means part of you think its not enough right?
      Do how much YOU believe is enough. Because you know your feeling best. (don't lose sleep though)
