Mind drifting...
I've had an insomnia problem for a while, so what I've found that worked is to day dream before I fall asleep. To fall asleep, I must day dream and let it slowly drift into real dreaming. It is slow, and if my mind gets distracted at any time I have to start over. The problem is any thoughts about WILDing or trying to remind myself to recognize I'm dreaming will screw it up. Is this a unique problem, or is there something I can do? I've tried day dreaming about lucid dreaming, but it either drifts, or it distracts me too much.

Day dreaming.... as in letting your mind wander? Or are you concentrating on one thing?

I think I do that like every night, like I think about something, and just keep thinking about it, and eventually I'll just fall asleep. If I do it in the morning, chances are it will transition into a dream.

Me too
I had that for a while too mate. Relax, though. In fact, that is what you need to do. Lie down, relax and think of anything. This will make you think of another thing and that will make you think of another thing. Sorry. Let me explain.
Eg If you thought of a Super Duck you might think of Superman. Then of comics. Then Spiderman. Then spiders then octopusses (8 legs) then the sea then fish then fish and chips...
So, so far, you've got from me, Super Duck to fish and chips. The only thing to worry about using this method is if you end up thinking about stuff you are scared of. If you fall asleep at this point you might have a nightmare.
Om the other hand, if you happen to think of a spear, and then Britney Spears and then you fall asleep, you might have a nice dream...you know what I mean.
Gee...I sure hope you're not a girl or else I'd look pretty stupid right now. Mind you, my signature explains how stupid / clever I am.
I'm begininng to babble. Tell me how it goes. PM me if u want.

Ummm that dosn't work
That dosn't work for me.
I day dream every night and i cannot remeber the last thing i was day dreaming about dye to me slipping into sleep. I am a very very good day dreamer as i can see things in such detail in my minds eye so its easy for me to slip of course due to the fact i want to think about everything.
If i do this in the mourning i do slip into a dream so it works then.
It just depends on who you are because we dream differently.

Yes, it's like that. My mind wanders until I fall asleep, dreaming about what I was day dreaming about. The problem is that if I try to control where it's wandering, for example try to think about lucid dreams, it doesn't work. I guess I'm stuck with trying to do reality checks in dreams, huh. I got really close once.

It's like that for me too. I just randomly think about all kinds of stuff, and eventually I find myself asleep, after like 15 to 30 minutes, but if I think about something specific I just get too distracted and can take like an hour+ to fall asleep. I don't think there is anything you can do about this, as I am pretty sure daydreaming yourself to sleep is natural, and trying to control this screws up your natural falling asleep pattern your body is wired to achieve. Of course it is nearly impossible not to try to control your daydreams for at least a while.

Yeah, I get this to. In fact, it's the only way I can fall asleep. Which totally sucks. If I concentrate, I can't fall asleep, meaning that I the only method I can truly use to lucid dream is DILDs, because Selfsuggestion, FILDs, WILDs, MILDs, and HILDs all want you to do something when you're on the border of sleep or you are about to sleep.
It really limits what you can do.
